General Notes:
Listed in the 1880 census as Magie Mitchel living in a household with her sisters and brothers and her Grandfather Peter Mitchel Census was from Grand Chute WI Tom Duescher remembers her as Great Grandmother that lived in Kewaunee with Grandmother VandenBerg - My dad and I were working on a new house in Kewaunee where we picked up a stray Kitten. We gave it to Great Grandma where she cared for it for a couple of years. I remember her falling and breaking her hip. She was living in the first floor of 901 Ellis street. My dad remodeled the kitchen area to put in a very small bathroom so that she would not have to climb the stairs. She was also known as Margaret Michell And Margaret Johnson via marriage. See newspaper clippings with store in Niagara WI and family owned business of thr paper mills etc. There seems to be several variations of the last name being used. I switched the last name to MICHELL based on the obituary from 1914 of John Stoveken her husband. This spelling was used in the obituary and I suspect that she helped write the obituary so is the most accurate at that time. It is likely the name chanced from the french canadian spelling seen in previos records. MARGARET PHILOMENE ST MICHEL Female

Margaret married John Charles Stoveken, son of John Frambach Stoveken Sr. and Gertrude Diedrich, on 06 Oct 1891 in Phlox, Langlade, Wisconsin, USA.1 (John Charles Stoveken was born on 23 Apr 1866 in Kaukauna, Outagamie, Wisconsin, USA,1 died on 23 Jan 1915 in Pembine, Marinette, Wisconsin, USA 1 and was buried on 28 Jan 1915 in Pembine, Marinette, Wisconsin, USA 1.) The cause of his death was stomach cancer.
Noted events in their marriage were:
• Marriage: St Joseph's Church, 06 Oct 1891, Phlox, Langlade, Wisconsin, USA. 1
• Occupation: Stoveken' s, (later Johnson's) Store, 1908-1945, Pembine, Marinette, Wisconsin, USA. 4 It is my understanding that in some of the intervening years between John Jr.'s death (1915) and the demise (of the store, 1945) there were at least two other parties, besides Margaret and her sons, James and Joyce, that ran Stoveken's (Johnson's, as it was known in the end) store. I think that the names of the other tenants were Sinkula and Pete Levine (LaVine?). The post office was run out of the store. Over the years, John and sons, Jim and Joyce, served as postmasters. I think that Mrs. Axle (Beatrice) Swanson may have been a niece of Margaret's.
• Publication: Marinette Eagle Star, 28 Nov 1945, Marinette, Marinette, Wisconsin, USA. 5 Johnson's Store Sold at Pembine Past 80, Woman Operator Retires
Pembine-Mrs. Margaret Johnson has sold her general store to Mrs. Axel Swanson and retired after 40 years in business here. Mrs. Johnson, the former Mrs. John Stoveken was one of Pembine's earliest settlers. Mr. and Mrs. Stoveken and their sons established the store 40 years ago and had operated it continuously. Now past 80, Mrs. Johnson has operated the business virtually alone the past few years.
Margaret next married John Martinus Johnson on 30 Apr 1917 in Goodman, Marinette, Wisconsin, USA.2 (John Martinus Johnson was born about 1885 2 and died in 1957 2.)
Marriage Notes:
Not much is known about John - He was disliked by all of the relatives that I spoke with. No one seems to know where he was from or where He went. Margaret divorced him but do not have a date for this. It is claimed by family members that He married her for her money, and left her when it was gone. However it is also widely speculated that Margaret had a very bad gambling habit. Losing huge amounts of property and wealth at the poker table. Not sure if this is the correct death record - Dates seem to be close to estimated dates John JOHNSON Birth Date: 2 Mar 1884 Death Date: Nov 1962 Social Security Number: 390-03-2867 State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: Wisconsin Actual Death Residence: Wisconsin 2
