bullet  General Notes:

I'm not sure how far she lived from her grandfather's, but I know they had to cross a river. She said they would go and if a boat wasn't on their side, her father would swim over and bring it to their side, and when they left for home he'd reverse the process to put the boat back on the other bank. Winters they could drive the horses over the ice.
[Kathryn Scherer Schuck]

She went to grade school, entered and received her teaching certificate from Michigan State Normal School at Lansing. She went to Nahma, Michigan for her first teaching assignment.
[Elizabeth Jaeger Gilbertson]

WEST DELTA DEPARTMENT -- June 11

...School closed in this district Friday last. The teacher -- Miss Alta Space, invited all the pupils home with her, where swings, &c., were prepared for their enjoyment: also ice cream and cake served to each of the little folks. Miss Space has given the best of satisfaction as teacher. This is her second term in this district. In the evening a number of her friends surprised her, the occasion being her birthday. A quiet social time was enjoyed.
[Grand Ledge Independent]

<=====>

Mother, Kitty and I spent one summer in Nahma and lived in the hotel. There was a cookie jar in the big pantry there. All the sidewalks were wooden and we could only attend Mass once a month. The church was used by all denominations.

About grandfather Space cutting his daughter out of the will with one dollar --- later Nelson Space, the son, and my mother broke the will and a specified sum was given to mother for each child. I remember riding in a surrey to Lansing, Michigan, when they were involved with the will.

I think we were the first family in Menekaunee to have a real bathtub too. There was a hotel run by Techla Eck's parents on the corner. It burned, and dad bought the bathroom fixtures and had them installed upstairs in our house.
[Elizabeth Scherer Watson]

My Grandmother was a college graduate [Albion College]and she was a teacher in Nahma when Grandfather met her. Her father did not like Grandfather and he left his estate to Grandmother's brother, Uncle Nelson.

This is a picture of Grandma the year she died. She was such a beautiful woman and see her hands? She had lovely hands but that last year her hands were so crippled, it was so bad that we fed her and everything. It was awful." [Conversation, Betty Jaeger Gilbertson and W.
