1633 Engelke Snak listed at Nr. 19; paid barley & rye rent to St. Martini monastery in Minden. Zw., p. 53)*

  • FREDERICK WILLIAM, ELECTOR OF BRANDENBURG, RULED 1640-88.
  • 1648 END OF 30 YRS WAR; FINAL PROTESTANT-CATHOLIC DIVISION;
  • PEACE OF WESTPHALIA SIGNED. Minden came under the personal rule of Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg, and changed from Catholic to Protestant (Lutheran)

1677 Marieke Schnake married Ernst Kreite, who apparently became known as Herman Schnake. (Zw. p. 69)*

1682 twelve houses in Unterluebbe (Including Schnake, nr. 19) belonged to Elector of Brandenburg "As a Minden landlord". (Zw. p. 50)*

1682 Toenies Schnake listed at nr. 33 Unterluebbe; first Schnake listing at that residence first listing for a Schnake any place other than nr. 19.

  • FREDERICK WILLIAM I, KING OF PRUSSIA, RULED 1713-1740
  • FREDERICK II, KING OF PRUSSIA ("Frederick the Great"), RULED 1740-1786. Much economic progress was made. He drained marshes, improved cultivation methods, liberalized the institution of serfdom. Possible that lives of the Schnakes, who were serfs, improved somewhat.

1744 Nr. 19 listed with 3 horses, 2 cows, 1 heifer, 0 sheep or pigs (Zw p. 64)*

1748 Johann Heinrich Schnake married Anna Maria Kloot, Oberluebbe 45 (check this out)

1748 Birth of Toenies (Brink) Schnake acc. to death records. (1757 acc to family records)

1750 Sixteen Morgens of land (About 30 acres) listed for the Schnakes at nr. 19. (zw p. 69)*

1770 Johann Hermann Schnake (House Nr 33) married Krieghoff, Rothenuffeln Nr. 21.

  • FREDERICK WILLIAM II, KING OF PRUSSIA (Ruled 1786-1797) - Nephew of Fred. II. Bad manager; bankrupted Prussia. Strict, censored religion and the press.
  • FREDERICK WILLIAM III, KING OF PRUSSIA, (Ruled 1797-1840. Serfdom ended during his reign. Serfs were free to leave the land but still had to pay rent to the landlord; nothing was done to help them own land. This freed the Schnakes to come to America.

1775 Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Schnake born, House nr. 19, to Toenies (Brink) Schnake & Annemarie Engel Schnake*

1777 Annamarie Engel Schnake (wife of Toenies (Brink) died (Story p. 17)*

1777 Toenies (Brink) Schnake remarries - Anne Marie Elizabeth Strumpelmeier. Toenies keeps the Schnake name and continues to reside at no. 19*

  • 1781 FRENCH REVOLUTION BEGINS. Liberal ideas spread, including to Germany.
  • 1796-1815 Napoleonic period; conquest of parts of Germany. This would be during the reign of Friedrich Wilhelm III, so he was ousted for awhile then reinstated when Napoleon was overthrown.

1796 Schnake Nr. 33 tries to get a school built in Unterluebbe. (Zw p. 84)

1796 Toenies (Brink) Schnake died. (Story; records. Says he was 48. Note that this does not jibe with birth above. Family records say he died 1815. * Family records say he died at #43 Unterlübbe.

1797 Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Schnake married Annamarie Elizabeth Paul (Story p. 13)*

1801 Johann Daniel Ludwig Schnake born (as oldest, he would inherit the land. Father of Karl Ludwig Hermann)*

1819 Ernst Heinrich Schnake (AKA Henry) born; later to marry Louise Brink & emigrate.*

1822 Maria Schnake born (Ernst Heirich's sister, who came to america, married Donnig)*

1831 Johann Daniel Ludwig Schnake married Marie Elisabeh Weihe*

1836 died: Schnake, Annamarie Engel, born Juergens, married to Johann Herman Schnake, Hireling.(how she was related is uncertain. Brothers sometimes became hirelings and lived in the same house.

1840 Died: Schnake, Friedrich Wilhelm, "Leibzüchter" & his wife, Annamarie Paul.*

1844 Ernst Heinrich Schnake (AKA Henry F.) born. at Nr. 43 Unterlübbe. Great-grandson of Toenies (Brink) Schnake & second wife. To keep the Ernst Heinrichs straight, we wil call him Ernst Heinrich #2.

1844 Petition for school: 4 Schnakes signed.

1846 Ernst Heinrich Schnake (AKA Henry) married Luise Brink of Rothenuffeln. Apparently moved to Rothenuffeln.*

1850 Ernst Heinrich Schnake (AKA Henry) and Luise (Brink) Schnake came to America.  Henry was born in House No. 19, Unterlübbe.*

1851 Karl Ludwig Hermann Schnake (AKA Herman) born.*

1856 - Ernst Heinrich Schnake born. Relationship to Schnakes at No. 19 unknown. To keep them straight, we will call him Ernst Heinrich #3.

1869 Approx. year when Karl Ludwig Hermann Schnake came to America and joined his Uncle Henry in Hoyleton, IL.*
