Subject: updated information
My name is Penny Maxine Schnake, I am the daughter of Loyd John Schnake Jr. and Marge Ann Garris Schnake of Pierce City, MO. My brother John Wayne Schnake married Denise Schlessman on February 23 1990, this ended in divorce in 1998.
My sister Polly Ann Schnake married again after Daryl Arnold in 1986 to Floyd Lee Clevenger. They have 3 children Justin Lee Clevenger born Feb 9 1979, Kortney Margann Clevenger born Feb 25 1981 and Dustin Troy Clevenger born Nov 13, 1986. I married Nathan Brian Dryer June 23 1990, this ended in divorce in Oct 1996. Out of this union we had 2 children, Alexx Johnathan Ray Dryer born Sept 27, 1991 and Trystann Maxine Dryer born on Aug 24,1994. I then married Howard Earnest Acheson on May 17, 1997 he then adopted my children on Aug 21 1998. Changing there names to Alexx John Howard Acheson and Trystann Maxine Acheson. Thank you for letting me submit.

Brian's Response: Thank you for your message. I looked at your website, but was unable to find my Mary SCHNAKE. All I know about her is that her father was Henry SCHNAKE, her mother Lizzie THRONE. (The parents must be your Casper Henry SCHNAKE and Elisabeth THRON.) I have no birth information for her, but she married Howard ZAHN on 12 Sep. 1900 in Arenzville, Cass, IL, so she must have been born somewhere around 1880. (Howard was a younger brother to my gg grandfather, John ZAHN.) Family lore has it that sometime later they divorced, and Howard married Mary's neice, Florence Maud TROUT, born 28 June 1905, married 02 Aug 1924 in Oklahoma City.
I am interested to know if Howard and Mary had any children. The ZAHNs that know the story don't know about any. Howard's descendants in California don't mention anything about them either. It is possible that they were childless. I am also interested in what happened to Mary.
Again, thanks for writing. I appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks for your response.
I think you have the right line in Casper Henry. Schnakes from that area quite frequently used the second name, or in the case of several names, the last name in the string as the given name.
You can certainly rest assured that it is the right line. As far as I know, Carl/Charles Schnake and sons Frederick and Casper Henry are the only family of Schnakes to settle in Cass County. Most of the other settled in Washington County, Illinois, or Vanderburgh County, Indiana.
This line goes back to Friedrich Wilhelm Schnake, born in Schnathorst, Prussia, in 1776. Friedrich Wilhelm's mother was a Schnake; she inherited the farmstead, and it was the custom for the name to go with the farm rather than with the male line. Her husband moved there and took the farm name.
You can read about your line by going to http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~schnake/story/chapter7.htm#schnatho rst
This should take you right to that part of the page. If you end up at the top of the page, just click on Schnathorst #4 Schnakes and it should take you there.
Another person researching the Cass County line is Mel Schnake of Valdosta, Georgia, a professor at Valdosta University. His e-mail is mschnake@valdosta.edu
I think you should contact him.
Good luck,
Roy

Roy, Thanks for letting me know about your web page. After looking it over and seeing that others are researching the SCHNAKE name in the same general area as I am, I thought I'd send what little I have on the SCHNAKE that I am looking for. I have been trying to find out a little more about a DENA KESTNER that is buried in Evansville and was what appears to be the second wife of my great grandfather, JAMES MONROE KESTNER. Below is her obit. From reading it I will assume that her maiden name was SCHNAKE, since that was her brother's name and that she was married at least once before to a CHAPMAN since she had a son with that name. Other than that I know nothing about her. If anyone see a connection I'd love to hear from you. Thanks in advance Ken Kistner 113 Main St Caledonia, Ms. 39740 ken1@ebicom.net
OBIT Mrs. DENA KESTNER, 41, Orlando, Fla, formerly of Evansville, Ind., where she lived until the past four years, died yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock, according to word received here. Mrs. KESTNER is survived by her husband, J.M. KESTNER; one daughter, Mrs ALBERT GOEBEL; one son, EDWARD CHAPMAN; one sister, Mrs CHRIST HORNBOSTEL; one brother, LOUIS SCHNAKE; two half brothers, FRED KARLISH of Malden, Mo., and WILL KARLISH of St. Louis, Mo. Funeral arrangements will be announced upon the arrival of the body, in Evansville, probably tomorrow. Note: DENA KESTNER died March 20th, 1926 at the age of 41 Yrs., 11Mo. and 20 days. If I have figured it right, that would mean that she was born 28 March 1884.
I discovered Ingo Schnake in Germany by an Internet search and sent her a message. Here is the response.

Hallo Roy, hallo Doris,
at first - i think that my englisch is not the best. I have learned it at school for many years. But i have not spoken englisch since 15 years and "computer-englisch" is not good for training.
But let us try:
I'm living in Doerentrup (a little town with 8000 people). Doerentrup is a member or a part of the "Kreis Lippe". The distance to Minden (Westfalen) is near 40 kilometers.
My parents (Waltraut and Ingo Schnake) are living in Minden. There i was born in the year 1959. My parents have another child, my brother Karsten. He is living in Braunschweig, Niedersachsen (eMail: 0531501204-0001@t-online.de).
So, i hope my englisch is good enough to understand me - I wish you a happy new year.

Roy,
I have a new email address so put this one in your records, c19382@il02lmps.comm.mot.com Next, my cousin Gary Schnake went to Pope County courthouse this past October and found a hand written record of the Marriage of my great grandfather William Schnake to Mary Hicks. On that record was the First name only of his father and it was Lewis and a note saying that he was born in Germany. I didn't find any Lewis's in your records of Germany though. Anyway the search continues, my brother Terry Schnake said he received something from you on his email recently. If you might know what that was could you send it to me now that you have my correct email address? Thanks. Well thats all I know for now, My cousin was given the origional charcoal portrait of Great Grandpa by his granddaughter while he was down in Southern Illinois. He's having it refraimed. Well I am looking forward to hearing from you and if you found anything out this summer in St. Louis.

Roy:
I found your web page very interesting. The Schnake name is probably related to my mother's maiden name, Schnaack, which comes from Pomerania (Pommern) in Germany (on the German/Polish border now). In fact, the Schnake name may have come from an American who mispronounced "Schnaack" (it's more like "shnock"). I have some extensive info that my grandfather collected. Are you interested in further contact?
Thanks, Hans U. Mair
Yes, I would like to have it. I will find a place for it. It might help someone.
No, the spelling "Schnake" did not come from an American mispronunciation. There are Schnakes in Germany around the Minden, Westphalia, area who spell it that way, and there are a number of Schnakes in Chile, South America, who use that spelling, including Dr. Eric Schnake, a high official in the government some years ago. So far, the spellings Schnake and Schnacke seem only to come from the Westphalia Schnakes. In the old German records of that area, I found Snak, Snack, Schnacke, Schnack, and Schnake, but no Schnaack. I would conclude that your family is probably from a different origin. Note in the query immediately below this one that there is a Schnack from Schleswig-Holstein, which is in the far north of Germany next to Denmark, and not so far from Pomerania. Maybe there is a connection here with your family. More on names---
Names usually are derived from words in a language having some meaning. Searching my dictionary, I find:
Schnake - noun. (1) A joke, fun, piece of nonsense (2) a gnat or midge.
I'm guessing the first meaning originated as slang derived from the second, but it could be the other way around. Since the farm where the Schnake ancestors originated was right at the edge of a marsh, and the name was first given to the farm, not the people, I assume the second meaning for our Schnakes.
Schnakig: Adjective. Comical, amusing. As you will note, there are people from a slightly different area of Germany having this name.
Schnack: Noun. Stuff and nonsense, fiddlesticks, twaddle.
Schnacken: Verb (you can tell from the -en ending). to chat, chatter, gossip.
My guess is that your Schnaack came from one of these. In north German dialects and in the closely related Dutch language, there are a lot of double a's. Harlem is spelled Haarlem quite often, for example. I think it just means that they drew out the sound a little longer.
Interesting that none of the names based on these words occur in central or southern Germany. Maybe they are all related somewhere back in history.
How far back have you tracked your name in Germany? Have you searched any of the address databases to see if you can find anyone of that name in the "old country"?
We prounounce the name "Snocky" to rhyme with "rocky". . Sounds like you use a similar pronunciation without the -ee ending. Most Americans don't make the "sch" sound on the beginning, which sounds as if you are trying to shush someone--"Shhhh", but they do in Germany, and the e on the end is a short e, pronounced there more like "uh" or "eh".

Hi! I am of the SCHNACK family, however, mine came from the Schleswig-Holstein area of Germany, some of the cities being, Haddeby, Gueby, Geltorf, Drage, Lohbarbek(sp?), Kathstelle, Foehrden Barl, aong others. I am not well versed in the German geography (as of yet), there fore am not certain if these cities are near to where your family came from. The first relative I have listed is Hans Schnack, born in Geltorf in 1641. In my group, the split came with the children of Marcus Schnack, who married Dorothea PREHN. This part of the family came to America in 1885. My husbands grandfather is Herman Adolph Schnack.
This part of the family is in Nebraska (except for us...we moved to Virginia last October.
Anyway...... I was hoping that perhaps we connected somewhere along the line. I have been corresponding with other parts of my family..those in Alaska and Hawaii....the brothers of Marcus families. If you think perhaps we connect...let me know..... I will send you the information I have. If you have family tree maker......I have some information on line.... (I am listed as Kay Edwards Schnack)
Until later!!!!!! Kay

Hi,
I have a TENNYSON descendant, Iva Pearl SIMPSON, marrying a SCHNAKE, probably iin Vanderburgh Co. Don't know his first name, nor anything else about the man. This couple had a daughter Evelyn Frances SCHNAKE.
Iva and SCHNAKE apparently divorced and she remarried a REYNOLDS.
Iva was both in 1902, so I suspect the first marriage was somewhere around 1920.
Any connetion to your SCHNAKE's?

I received a copy of an affidavit for delayed registration of birth of one of my Great grandfathers children from a relative. On it is the birthdate and County of WILLIAM SCHNAKE SR. Born in Rudement in the county of Saline IL. on Feb. 8, 1858. He Married MARY HICKS from Arkansas, Date unknown and they had 6 children; IDA SCHNAKE June 15 1894, JOHN T. SCHNAKE June 2 1896, WILLIAM SCHNAKE JR. June 7 1898, SARAH E. SCHNAKE April 14, 1899, FRED SCHNAKE Dec. 11 1901, and FRANK SCHNAKE birth date unknown. I even received a picture of a portrait of William Sr.
Actually the town is spelled Rudmont on the affidavit, but there is no town by that name in all of Illinois. Saline County is only a couple counties over and south of Washington County New Minden area.
Interested in contacting anyone with info on this family.

This is GREG SCHNAKE, I have been able to gather some more information for your site. I talked to my father and obtained this information, from the Centenial Album of the Villiage of St. Peter. In there on page 149 is a history of my family, it states.
The originof this family began when Grandfather ERNST HEINRICH SCHNAKE was born on Tuesday evening, August 12, 1856, in Uterlubbe, Germany. His parents were KARL FRIEDRICH WILHELM SCHNAKE and CHRISTINE KAROLINE MARIA ELIZABETH (PRIES) SCHNAKE. Grandmother CAROLINE FRIEDERIKE LOUISE (OPFER) SCHNAKE was born at 7 a.m. on December 17, 1956. Her parents were FRIEDRICK AND LOUIS (SCHULTE) OPFER from Walferdingsen, Germany.
In 1881 Ernst and Caroline immigrated to the United States from Unterlubbe, District of Minden. They first settled on a small farm about two and one-half miles west of St. Peter. They later purchased a large farm one-half mile west of St. Peter.
Children of Ernst and Caroline were MARY, HELENA ANNA, EMMA, EMILIE, GEORGE, LOUISE, MATHILDA, CLARA, WALTER AND ELLA.
George, the oldest son (1890-1973), and Ella (Borchelt) Schnake (1892-1980) had five children: Arthur (deceased); Elroy A. Schnake, married to Louise Buettner, living in Findlay, Ohio; Elvera (deceased); Lucille, married to Lawrence Scheer, living in St. Peter; and Raymond G. Schnake, married to Ruth Wenholz, also in St. Peter.
About 1915 George Schnake was employed at the August Borchelt Company. This was a hay and grain operation type Business. Later, a lumberyard was added.
In 1952 George Schnake took over the grain and seed division of the Borchelt Co. and operated it under the name of George Schnake and Co. Raymond joined the firm in 1953 and incorporated it in 1958 as Schnake, Inc. In 1979 the company was sold to the Pabor Division of Archer Daniel Midland.
Childern of Raymond and Ruth are Kathryn Ann Wagner (Metamora, Illinois) David George (Carterville, Illinois and Gregory Walter of Ft. Worth Texas.
I hope this information will assist you. I was very intrerested to know if you have any additional text written on the family, it is very informative.

Now, an interesting sidelight: The following is regarding the name Schnacky, a very divergent spelling. This line does not seem to be related. "Schnacky" is apparently derived from "Schnakig" meaning funny or comical, not from Schnake, meaning gnat.
