Schnakes in Chile

Web page for Chilean Schnakes http://vasquez-hermosilla.myheritage.com/

The Schnakes of Chile seem to have originated in the village of Dransfeld, north of Kassel.  They were city dwellers and linen weavers in the early records. This web site deals mainly with the Schnakes of the Minden area. Dransfeld is near the Weser River just upstream from Minden, which was known for linen weavers.  However, the Schnakes of the Minden area were all farmers.  The life style and background of this family makes it seem that they are probably not related.  They were in Dransfeld since at least 1700, and the early spellings of the Schnake name in Dransfeld (Schnaackens) were not found in any of the Minden Schnake records.  But it is an interesting family and bears the same surname so SchnakeNet is proud to host information about our Chilean "cousins".

SchnakeNet would like to translate these pages into Spanish. Any Chilean Schnakes interested in helping?

Here is the information that has come in.

September, 1997 - I just received E-mail from Christian Schnake in Chile, who discovered the Schnake page. He says there are hundreds of Schnakes in Chile, all descended from a common ancestor, Heinrich Karl Schnake, born Sept. 7, 1867, in Kassel, a city about 100 kilometers (about 65 miles) from Minden. Here is Chris's message:

Dear Roy : I am happy to tell you about a numerous family of Schnake living in Chile since the last years of XIX . My grandfather , Carl Schnake , borned in Cassel at 1867 , arrived Valparaiso , Chile at 1887 approx. At the end of 1890's married with Ema Vergara , and they had nine sons :Carlos , Oscar , Enrique ( my father) , Elfride , Guillermo , Graciela , Adela , Hugo and Waldo .Each of these formed his own families , so my father had six boys (I'm the last) , and I have eleven boys with my woman Marcela Ferrer . So , you can see that probably are many hundreds of Schnake in Chile ,all coming fron the same root , and it was for me a beautiful surprise to know that in the USA is there a large number of people , probably coming from one common family. Excuse me for my poor English , and if you want to know something more about the Chilean's Schnakes , please write me to : Christian Schnake Silva email : schnferr@netline.cl: (Note: It is Spanish custom to follow the family name with the mother's maiden name (I think that is correct), so Christian Schnake Silva would indicate that his father is a Schnake and that is his family name. -Webmaster) I asked Christian for further information about his ancestor and he sent me the following:

Dear Roy : Here I send you some information that could be useful : from The Baptism Certificate from "Evangelisches Gemeindeamt aus Kassel " . It says : Zu und Vornammen : Schnake , Heinrich Karl ; geboren am 07 , September 1867 in Rothenditmold / jetzt Kassel-Rothenditmold getauft am 27. September 1867 in Kassel . Die Eltern : Vater : Schnake , Georg Friedrich Wilhelm ; Stand : Bürger und Weichensteller. Mutter : Jatho , Rosine Charlotte

Translation: Evangelical Parish Records of Kassel: sur- and forenames: Schnake, Heinrich Karl, born on 7 September, 1868 in Rothenditmold, today Kassel-Rothenditmold, baptized 27 September 1868 in Kassel. The parents: Father - Schnake, Georg Friedrich Wilhelm, occupation: Townsman and railroad switchman. Mother: Jatho, Rosine Charlotte.

2/8/2000 The following message from Jorge

Dear Roy

I write you to send you more data about the Schnake in Chile.

My great-grandfather is the same grandfather of Christian Schnake that it has written you.

As was indicating to you Christian, my great-grandfather, Karl Schnake (Jatho), was born in Kassel, 7 of September of 1867, son of Georg Schnake and Charlotte Jatho. Around the end of century XIX, traveled to Chile as agent of the Bank Aleman of Settling, being based in Santiago. Expired in Santiago, 7 of September of 1958.

Here it was married with Emma Vergara González and it was father of 9 children: Carlos (1898 - 1960s), my grandfather; Oscar (1899-1974) - medical, that it was founding and first Secretary-General of the Socialistic Party of Chile, currently in the government, Senator, Public Work Minister, and ambassador of Chile - ; Enrique - father of Christian -; Elfride , Guillermo , Graciela , Adela , Hugo and Waldo. All they already they have expired.

The Descendants

1. - Carlos Schnake Vergara, attorney. Married with Javiera Padilla Zapata in 1923, had 4 children: Alice (married with Gastón Sáez Rondanelli, 8 children: Margarita, María Luisa, Gastón, Juan, Carmen Gloria, Miguel, Marcela and Rodrigo); Hilda (married with her cousin Erich Schnake, 3 children -currently resident in France: Viviana, Erika and Alfonso); Carlos (married with Adriana Vásquez, 7 children: Carlos, Patricio, Cecilia, Verónica, Fernando, Ana María and Loreto), and Javiera - my mother -, born october 29 , 1945 (married with Jorge Claissac, 4 children: Jorge - I, been born october 18, 1969; Pablo, been born october 22, 1970; Francisco Javier, been born october 9, 1971 and María Ignacia, born january 23, 1978).

2. - Oscar Schnake Vergara, medical . Married for the first time with Graciela Contreras - that it was mayor of Santiago -, had two children : Jorge and a daughter whose name do not remember. Married for the second time with Gilliane Balmaceda - niece of the President of Chile, José Manuel Balmaceda -, it did not had children of this marriage.

(E-mail message from Germany 5/4/2000 says her hame was Claudia.  The person sending the message says he is a friend.  The friend says that she married first Achim Domnick.)

3. - Enrique Schnake Vergara, architect. Married for the first time with Marina Silva Maturana, it had 4 children of this marriage: Marine (married with I Drago Vodanovic, 3 children: Hernán - that it was Senator of the Socialistic Party; Victoria and Natalio), Adriana (married for the first time with a surname doctor Varas, I believe that has 3 children; Enrique, married with a surname Mrs. Lara, seems me that have 4 children); and Erich - attorney, been born in 1930s, that it was deputy (1969-1973) and Senator (1973), of the Socialistic Party. Married 4 times, with Hilda Schnake Padilla (3 children), Wallie Neale (4 children. Loreto, María José, Felipe y Francisca), Pillar Walker (1 son. Erich) and Florencia Díaz (3 children). Married for the second time with Olga Silva, it had 2 children: Christian and Alex.

4. - Elfride Schnake Vergara, married with a surname sir Araya, had 3 children: Raquel, Gabriel and Adriana.

5. - Guillermo Schnake Vergara, married, had 3 children: Guillermo, Robert and Emma (Married with Jorge Casagrande, 1 daughter: Claudia)

6. - Graciela Schnake Vergara, married, it did not had children.

7. - Adela Schnake Vergara, single, it did not had children.

8. - Hugo Schnake Vergara. single, it did not had children and died being very youth.

9. - Waldo Schnake Vergara. married for the first time with a surname Mrs. Bilbao, had 1 son, named Hugo (Married for the first time with Malba Ibar, father from Hugo, Malba and Alex. It is married for the second time in Venezuela, where it resides currently, but do not know greater data). Married for the second time with "Mema" Fernández, Waldo had 4 children of this marriage: Waldo, Hermann, Teresa and Palmira.

In the generation of the great great gransons of the first Schnake in Chile, do not know which can be their number.

Additionally, I comment you that my great-grandfather was based in the central zone of Chile, first in Santiago, being moved after retired to the south zone, to some 800 kilometers of the capital. More to the south (Puerto Montt, to some 1000 kilometers to the south of Santiago), is found other family Schnake, with the one which never we have had greater contact, but that has their origin in a cousin of my great-grandfather, named Francisco Schnake. Of that familiar line can not provide you greater antecedent, but be that are an important group of people.

I wait that this information could be you of usefulness. I will attempt to complete more my data. If you need additional information, I will try to send it you.

Regards from Chile,

Jorge Claissac Schnake.

PD. In Chile, first is used the surname of the father and then that of the mother.

Picture of Friedrich Schnake family

Handwritten information above the picture says that Friedrich Schnake was the brother of Heinrich Christoph, but the chart above shows that Heinrich Christoph was a cousin, the child of his father's twin brother.

Note that theabove information shows the mother's name as "Helena geb. (born) Jatho" The baptismal certificate of Heinrich Karl states that his mother was Rosine Charlotte Jatho. Found on the Mormon IGI was the following: Jatho, Dorothee Rosine Wilhelmine Charlotte, b. 3 Feb. 1837, Dransfeld, Hannover, Prussia. This is undoubtedly the correct person. Perhaps the "Helena" was a form of the name Wilhelmine. The grandmother (Grossmutter),  Frieda geb. (born) Klippal, was probably his mother; IGI records show that Dorothee Rosine Wilhelmine Charlotte Jatho's mother was Dorothee Rosine Charlotte Eilers.
