OBIT -- John Riel, 88, 127 Fond du Lac St, died Wednesday evening, Aug. 18, at Waupun Memorial Hospital. He was born April 25, 1888, in the Town of Alto, a son of Jacob and Jacoba Fedders Riel. He married the former Winnie Searvogel Sept. 23, 1914 , in Waupun. The couple farmed in the Alto area, and later Mr. Riel became employed by The Shaler Company where he retired in 1955. Mr. Riel was a member of Emmanuel Reformed Church. Survivors include six sons, James, Clarence, Wally, Garret, Marvin and Wilbert all of Waupun; four daughters, Mrs. Janet Streekstra and Mrs. Orville Able both of Waupun, Mrs. Jo Ann Ver Straate of Oostburg and Mrs. Clifford Otte of Sheboygan Falls. Other survivors are numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters; Mrs. Ella Van Loo, Waupun; and Mrs. Jessie Van Ruisywk, Markesan. He was preceded in death by his wife, one daughter, two brothers and three sisters. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Emmanuel Reformed Church, Waupun. The Rev. George Chermak officiated. Burial was in Alto Cemetery. Visitation was held from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home, Waupun, and at the church from noon until the time of service.

John Riel, 88, 127 Fond du Lac St, died Wednesday evening, at Waupun Memorial Hospital. Born April 25, 1888, in the Town of Alto, he was a son of Jacob and Jacoba Fedders Riel. He married Winnie Searvogel on Sept. 23, 1914, at Waupun.
The couple farmed in the Alto area, and later Mr. Riel was employed by The Shaler Co., at Waupun, retiring in 1955. He was a member of Emmanuel Reformed Church.
Survivors include six sons, James, Clarence, Wally, Garret, Marvin and Wilbert, all of Waupun; four daughters,
Mrs. Janet Streekstra and Mrs. Orville Abel, both of Waupun, Mrs. JoAnn VerStraate of Oostburg and Mrs. Clifford Otte of Sheboygan Falls.
Also surviving are numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters; Mrs. Ella Van Loo of Waupun and Mrs. Jessie Van Ruisywk, Markesan.
His wife died in August 1974, and a daughter, two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at Emmanuel Reformed Church, Waupun, with the Rev. George Chermak officiating. Burial will follow in Alto Cemetery.

OBIT -- Mrs. John Riel, 76, of 511 S. Watertown St., Waupun, died Thursday evening at Waupun Memorial Hospital. She was dead on arrival of an apparent heart attack. Born Aug. 22, 1897, in the Town of Alto, she was the daughter of Cornelius and Anna Nummerdor Searvogel. The former Winnie Searvogel was married in September 1914 at Waupun. The couple farmed in the Alto area, and later Mr. Riel became employed by Shaler Co., Waupun; retiring in 1965. Mrs. Riel was a member of Emmanuel Reformed Church, Waupun. Survivors include her widower; six sons, James, Clarence, Wally, Garret, Marvin and Wilbert all of Waupun; four daughters, Mrs. Janet Streekstra and Mrs. Orville Able both of Waupun, Mrs. Jo Ann Ver Straate of Oostburg and Mrs. Clifford Otte of Sheboygan Falls. Hospital.
Jim was born on Aug. 14, 1915, the son of John and Winnie (Searvogel) Riel.
On Jan. 16, 1941, he married Alice Smits.
Jim worked at National Rivet in Waupun for 36 years. Jim enjoyed gardening,
woodworking, playing pool and bowling. He especially loved to play
horseshoes.
Jim was an active member of the First Reformed Church in Waupun serving as a
deacon.
Survivors include his wife, Alice, of Waupun; five children, Wendell
(Dolores) Riel of Waupun, Wannita (John) Schlom of Waupun, Jerald (Rosalie)
Riel of Waupun, Dennis L. Riel of Waupun and Jeanine (Clayton) of Brandon;
six grandchildren, Brian Riel, Amy (Robert) Waldoch, Jeremy (Megan) Riel,
Laurie (Irvin) Beek, Trisha and Katie Jahns; one great-grandchild, Juliana
Riel; five brothers and sisters, Walter (Katherine) Riel of Waupun, Wilbert
(Joyce) Riel of Waupun, Angeline Abel of Fond du Lac, Johanna (Kenneth) Ver
Stratte of Oostburg and Haleta (Clifford) Otte of Sheboygan Falls; nieces
and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and five brothers and sisters,
Clarence Riel, Garret Riel, Marvin Riel, Janet Streekstra and Katherine
Riel.
* Services: Funeral Services for Jim will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday,
May 5, 2004 at the First Reformed Church in Waupun with the Rev. Rick Boon
officiating. Burial to follow at Alto Cemetery in Alto.
* Visitation: Friends and Relatives may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday May
4, 2004, at the Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until the time
of services on Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Riel died Monday, Aug. 20, 1979, in Waupun.
He was born April 15, 1917, in the Town of Alto, a son of John and Winnie Searvogel Riel. He married Margaret Hesselink in December of 1938. He was employed at National Rivet Co., Waupun, and retired in 1972. He was a member of Alto Reformed Church.
Survivors include his wife; five brothers, James, Wally Sr., Garrit, Marion and Wilbur, all of Waupun; and four sisters, Mrs. Janet Streekstra of Waupun, Mrs. Orville Abel of Waupun, Mrs. JoAnn Ver Straate of Oostburg, and Mrs. Clifford Ott of Sheboygan Falls.
He was preceded in death by one sister.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The casket will remain closed.
The Rev. Cornie Keunen will officiate at the funeral services, and burial will be in Forest Mound Cemetery, Waupun.

Obituary -- Mrs. Janet Streekstra, 68, of Route 2, Waupun, died Friday, June 19, 1987, at Waupun Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Streekstra was born Feb. 22, 1919, a daughter to John and Winnie Searvogel Riel in the Town of Alto. In 1941, she was married to Henry Nummerdor. On Dec. 14, 1968, she was married to Peter Streekstra. He died in 1969. She was a lifetime resident of Waupun and was a member of United Methodist Church and its church circle. Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Van Houten and Carol Cole, both of Waupun; two sons, Wayne Nummerdor of Waupun and Alton Streekstra of Route 1, Brandon; 12 grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Orville (Angeline) Abel of Fontant, Calif., Mrs. Kenneth (Johanna) Ver Straate of Oostburg and Mrs. Clifford (Haleta) Otte of Sheboygan Falls; and five brothers, James, Walter, Garrit and Wilbert Riel, all of Waupun, and Marvin Riel of Brandon. She was preceded in death by one son, one granddaughter, one brother and one sister. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at United Methodist Church, Waupun. The Rev. Carol J. Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Cattaraugus Cemetery, Waupun. Photo Johanna Riel was born on 21 Apr 1925 in Town of Trenton, Dodge, WI. She died on 1 Aug 2007 in Sheboygan, Sheboygan, WI. Johanna VerStraate, of 215 South 10th Street, Oostburg, died peacefully on Wednesday morning, August 1, 2007 at Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center with her family at her side.
Johanna was born on April 21, 1925 in the Town of Alto, in Fond du Lac County, the daughter of the late John and Winnie (Searvogel) Riel.
On June 10, 1949 she married Kenneth VerStraate in Waupun.
Johanna worked at Tolibia Cheese in Oostburg for 19 years before her retirement.
She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Oostburg and participated in the Women's Missionary Society, Bible Coffee Groups, and the Young at Heart. She also attended the Oostburg Senior Citizens. Johanna enjoyed doing puzzles and crafts. She was a devoted homemaker to her family.
Johanna is survived by her husband, Kenneth; a daughter, Sharon (Jim) Dekanich of Sheboygan Falls; a son, Glenn (Shari) VerStraate of Howards Grove; six grandchildren, Matthew Dekanich, Kimberly (Dale) Porter, Angela Dekanich, Laura, Jill and Eric VerStraate; one great grandson, Isaac Porter; two sisters, Angeline Abel of Fond du Lac and Haleta (Cliff) Otte, of Sheboygan Falls; two brothers, Walter (Catherine) Riel and Wilbert (Joyce) Riel, both of Waupun; a sister-in-law, Alice Riel of Waupun; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Janet (Peter) Streekstra and Katherine Riel; and four brothers, James, Clarence (Margaret), Garret (Johanna), and Marvin Riel.
Funeral services will be held at the First Reformed Church in Oostburg on Saturday, August 4, 2007 at 10 am with the Rev. Brian Taylor officiating. A family service will precede at 9:45 am in the fellowship hall. Burial will take place at Oostburg Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg on Friday from 4-8 pm, and on Saturday, at church, from 9 am until the time of service.

WAUPUN - Garret J. Riel, 73, of Waupun, died on Thursday, March 29, 2001, at the Christian Home, Waupun.
The funeral will be held on Monday, April 2, at 2 p.m., at Pella Lutheran Church, Waupun. The Rev. Kenneth Spence will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Mound Cemetery, Waupun. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post No. 210 firing squad.
Mr. Riel was born on May 9, 1927, in Alto, the son of John and Winnie (Searvogel) Riel. He was married on May 6, 1949, to Johanna "Jo" Aarts. Mr. Riel served in the U.S. Army in Germany during World War II, from July 9, 1945 to Dec. 22, 1946. He worked as a carpenter for Home Contractors for 32 years. He was a member of Bentley-Hull VFW Post No. 6709 for 20 years and a member of the Getchel-Nelson American Legion Post No. 210 for 38 years. He was a member of Pella Lutheran Church, Waupun.
Survivors include his wife, Johanna "Jo" Riel, Waupun; two daughters, Debra Riel and Angela (Scott) Fairbank, both of Waupun; three grandchildren, Betty Fairbank, Erinn Fairbank and Patricia Nieuwdort; three brothers, James (Alice) Riel, Walter (Katherine) Riel and Wilbert (Joyce) Riel, all of Waupun; three sisters, Angeline Abel, Mayville, Johanna (Kenneth) Der Stratte, Oostburg, and Haleta (Cliff) Otte, Sheboygan Falls; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; two sisters, and one son-in-law.
