Troy. Mary Lou was a member of the Chamber of Commerce in Mukwonago and East
Troy as well as actively involved in many community events. She graduated
from high school in Oshkosh and attended UW Oshkosh. She was a long time
member of St. Peters Catholic Church in East Troy. A warm thank you to the
special nurses and doctors at the Waukesha Memorial Hospital Oncology Unit.

Johnston, Mary Ann Elsner

Of Port Orchard, WA. Died in her sleep November 16, 1998 at Harrison Memorial
Hospital, Bremerton, WA. Although she had been battling cancer for more than
a year, she continued with her usual activities and her cheerful disposition
until the last few days. The only daughter of Louis and Norma Elsner, Mary
Ann was born in Milwaukee, WI on October 19, 1933, and attended local
parochial schools. She was employed by the Square D Corporation, and for many
years by the Equitable Life Insurance Company. With Equitable Life she was
transferred first to New Orleans (where she met her future husband) and then
to Orange County, CA as the company's first female manager. Mary Ann and Jim
Johnston were married in 1976 in Mariposa, CA. She and her husband were
founding partners of National Legal Databases, a pioneering firm in the field
of computerized legal research. Through subsequent corporate mergers, the
firm continues under the business style of AccessLaw, Inc. Several years ago,
the Johnstons settled in Port Orchard, Washington. She is survived by her
husband, James R. Johnston, brothers Donald and James Elsner of Milwaukee,
and numerous nieces and nephews.

and photography for 30 years at Boys Tech and Bay View High Schools. He was
an active member of many organizations; Past Commander of Bay View Post 180
and Milwaukee County American Legions, member of Independence Lodge 80,
Tripoli Shrine, Eagles, Moose Lodge 49, Southeast Churches United, Bay View
Business Assoc., Gideons, Sunday Morning Breakfast Club and a charter member
of the Bay View Historical Society. He was also a bus driver for the Pioneer
Drum and Bugle Corps and Challenger Band. He received the Carnegie Award for
active heroism and other awards for his actions during an accident that left
him paralyzed in 1981. During his stay in the Good Samaritan Home in Lodi, he
remained active writing for the Lodi Enterprise, tutoring Lodi Elementary
students and was a member of the Lodi Optimists. The family would especially
like to thank the nurses and staff at the Lodi Good Samaritan Home for their
wonderful care of Ralph. If desired, memorials appreciated to the church or

Van Altena, John Paul Sr.

Milton. Age 81, passed away Sat., Nov. 14, 1998 at his home surrounded by his
family. John was born Oct. 29, 1917, in Milwaukee, the son of William R. and
Marie R. Van Altena. He married Adele R. Dauer April 9, 1943. He graduated
from UW-Madison and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a lieutenant
in the Aircraft Carrier Bomber Squad in the Pacific. He was awarded the Air
Medal and two Distinguished Flying Crosses. John was an area farmer, active
conservationist, and an outdoors person. After retirement he and his wife
spent several years sailing in the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Mediterranean. He
received awards in forestry and conservation, such as the Wildlife Habitat
Award in 1981 from Rock Co. Soil and Conservation District, Tree Farmer of
the Year, and in 1996 the Natural Preservation Award from Rock Co.
Conservationists. They had lived the 48 years in the Milton area.

He is survived by his wife, Adele; 2 sons, John P. (Connie) Van Altena Jr.,
and Don R. (Ann) Van Altena, both of Milton; 2 daughters, Polly V. Jerrell of
Virginia, and Susan V. (Richard) Quirk of London, England; 6 grandchildren;
Scottie Ann Jerrell, Matthew R. (Genevieve) Van Altena, Forbes P. Van Altena,
Andrew T. Van Altena, Katherine M. Van Altena, and Gina L. Van Altena; a
great-granddaughter, Sheryl Huet. He was preceded in death by his parents;
and a brother, William.
