Levy, Blanche R.

Born Aug. 7, 1914. Died Feb. 3, 1998. Age 83 years. Survived by niece Elaine
Gordon; grand-niece Cheryl (Alan) Glicker; Grand-nephew, Roger Gordon (Dawn
Walters), great-grand nieces, Rebecca and Jessica Kronberger, great-grand
nephews, Steven Gordon (Marilyn), Nicky and Adam Gordon and great-great-grand
niece, Ashley Gordon, cousin and close friend Roseanne Rockstein, and other
relatives and many friends.

Blanche willed her body to the Medical College of Wisconsin. This was the
typical gesture of a woman who valued education above all else. Salutatorian
of her 1931 graduating class of Shorewood High School, she took college
courses all of her life. An avid reader, she had lead a Great Books Group
and belonged, recently, to the Shorewood Library's Book Club. She was also a
"traveling teacher" holding current events classes at retirement homes such
as the Catholic Home and St. John's home. Blanche spent hours every week
reading and watching the news on TV and clipping articles of interests for
her "students". A retired employee of Johnson Controls, she had served as a
union steward. Lately, when poor health forced her to give up her automobile,
and she was unable to walk any distance, she became a familiar figure around
Shorewood and its immediate environment on her battery-operated cart that
sported an orange mitten gaily tied to a tall pole attached to the rear of
the vehicle. On her cart, Blanche visited Atwater Park where she made
friends with children, dogs, parents and people in general. Gregarious and
outgoing, she became acquainted with everyone who answered her friendly
overtures. An informal memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, Feb. 22,
1998 at 2101 W. Good Hope Rd. at 1:30pm.
