Swansen, Theodore L.

Whitewater. Known to his family and friends as Ted or TL, died on July 28,
1998 at the Fairhaven Retirement Community in Whitewater. He was born on
March 13, 1907 in Madison and moved with his family to Milwaukee in 1915
where he later attended Riverside High School. There he met Clarinda
Crittenden and they were married in 1933 after TL had graduated from the
Engineering School of the University of Wisconsin in 1928.

Three sons were born of their marriage; one who died shortly after birth.
Samuel Theodore Swansen, a lawyer who lives near Philadelphia and Christopher
Crittenden Swansen, a composer and painter who died in 1995.

TL worked in the tractor division of Allis Chalmers and in its supercharger
division during WWII. During that war, he was commissioned a Navy Officer and
worked in England at the DeHavilland Aircraft Factory as part of an
American-British team developing the jet engine.

In 1947, TL became the Chief Engineer of the Ladish Company in Cudahy and
retired in 1971 as Vice President in charge of manufacturing. During his career
there, Ladish pioneered in the production of drop forgings of a size and
complexity previously unimaginable for use in the defense and space
industries.

After his retirement, TL obtained patents in connection with a renewable energy
system, known as The Energy Island TM, which uses wind, sun, and modern
technology to produce sustainable electric power off the power grid.

After the death of his wife Clarinda in 1974, TL married her close friend,
Danielle Guillery, of Harreville les Chanteurs, France. They built the Solar
Den on Pleasant Lake Road, East Troy where they lived until they moved to
Fairhaven in 1994. Danielle died there on July 1, 1997, and her body was
transported to Harreville thereafter for burial.

Besides his son Sam, and Sam's wife Donna, a landscape designer, TL is survived
by a brother John P. Swansen of Black Mountain, NC; a sister-in-law, Elise
Swansen of River Hills (Milwaukee), the widow of his brother Robert C.
Swansen; a daughter-in-law Meg Swansen, the knitting designer, of Pittsville,
WI, 5 grandchildren: Jessica S. Bonelli of Denver, Theodor A. Swansen of
Philadelphia, Christopher C. Swansen of Downington, PA, Alexander Cully
Swansen of Pittsville, and Katherine Liesl Swansen de Monroy of Madison, and
5 great grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Betts Funeral Home of Elkhorn. TL's ashes
will be spread at Yardland Farm, his and Clarinda's former home on Pleasant
Lake Road on the site where her ashes were spread in 1974, in connection with
a memorial service planned for this fall.

Contributions in TL's memory may be made to the Fairhaven Retirement
Community, 435 Starin Road, Whitewater, WI 53190. TL was a friend and mentor
to many and will be greatly missed by his family.
