Gashel; Driver Is Held on OMVI Charge Rites Wednesday For Accident Victim; Mrs.
Gashel Still In Hospital As the result of a car crash in which he and his wife
were both injured last Wednesday evening, Jacob P. Gashel, 76, of Nora Springs
died early Monday morning in the Mercy hospital in Mason City. The crash occurred
about a mile and a half east of Nora Springs on highway 18. Mr. and Mrs. Gashel
had gone for a short drive to seek relief after a hot day. They were headed
west when their car was struck head-on by an east-bound car driven by Francis
Anthony Weaver, 30, originally of Lakota, but who had been working in Mason City
this summer. Weaver was also hospitalized with cuts and bruises, but was dismissed
from the hospital Monday morning. Charges of manslaughter and driving while
intoxicated, third offense, were filed against Weaver this week. Bonds of $5,000
and $3,000 on the two charges were set by John McGeeney, justice of the peace
at Charles City. Weaver was in the Floyd County jail Tuesday for failure to
provide the bonds. Wrong Side Of Road The drunk driving charge was filed
Monday by the state highway patrol, which investigated the accident July 10
in which Mr. Gashel was fatally injured. When an autopsy showed that death resulted
from injuries suffered in the accident, the manslaughter charge was filed Tuesday.
The highway patrol said Weaver's car was on the wrong side of the road at the
time of the collision. Mrs. Gashel, 67, is still in Mercy hospital in Mason
City. She suffered a fractured leg and other injuries. Funeral services for
Mr. Gashel were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, July 17, in the Evangelical
United Brethren church, and were conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Vernon C.
Overturf. The Sheckler funeral home had charge of arrangements. Jacob Patrick
Gashel, one of 11 children of Joseph and Anna (Kolb) Gashel, was born March 17,
