Car Crash Fatal to Jake Gashel; Driver Is Held on OMVI Charge Rites Wednesday For Accident Victim; Mrs. Gashel Still In Hospital As the result of a car crash in which he and his wife were both injured last Wednesday evening, Jacob P. Gashel, 76, of Nora Springs died early Monday morning in the Mercy hospital in Mason City. The crash occurred about a mile and a half east of Nora Springs on highway 18. Mr. and Mrs. Gashel had gone for a short drive to seek relief after a hot day. They were headed west when their car was struck head-on by an east-bound car driven by Francis Anthony Weaver, 30, originally of Lakota, but who had been working in Mason City this summer. Weaver was also hospitalized with cuts and bruises, but was dismissed from the hospital Monday morning. Charges of manslaughter and driving while intoxicated, third offense, were filed against Weaver this week. Bonds of $5,000 and $3,000 on the two charges were set by John McGeeney, justice of the peace at Charles City. Weaver was in the Floyd County jail Tuesday for failure to provide the bonds. Wrong Side Of Road The drunk driving charge was filed Monday by the state highway patrol, which investigated the accident July 10 in which Mr. Gashel was fatally injured. When an autopsy showed that death resulted from injuries suffered in the accident, the manslaughter charge was filed Tuesday. The highway patrol said Weaver's car was on the wrong side of the road at the time of the collision. Mrs. Gashel, 67, is still in Mercy hospital in Mason City. She suffered a fractured leg and other injuries. Funeral services for Mr. Gashel were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, July 17, in the Evangelical United Brethren church, and were conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Vernon C. Overturf. The Sheckler funeral home had charge of arrangements. Jacob Patrick Gashel, one of 11 children of Joseph and Anna (Kolb) Gashel, was born March 17, 1881, on what is now the George Marshall farm, north of Nora Springs. Three brothers have preceded him in death -- John, Edward and Ezydor Gashel. Surviving brothers and sister of Rockford, Mrs. John (Ida) Govro of Rockford, Mrs. Roy (Emma) Rodrian, Pine River, Minn., Mrs. Fred (Anna) Ueker of Nora Springs, Mrs. Heino (Julia) Ihde of Mason City and Joe Gashel of Mason City. Mr. Gashel was married to Miss Stella Hofmaster of Nora Springs on May 12, 1932, and she survives him. He had at least one time owned and operated a pool hall in Staples, Minn., and later lived in Mason City for a number of years, while he was employed as fireman on the Milwaukee railroad.

CHARLES CITY—Funeral services for Jacob P Gashel, 76, Nora Springs, will be held at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Nora Springs, at 2 p.m. Wednesday with burial in Park Cemetery. The Sheckler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Gashel, his wife, 67, and Frances Anthony Weaver, 30, Mason .City, formerly of Lakota, were injured Sunday in a two-car collision east of Nora Springs. Mrs. Gashel and Weaver remain in Mercy Hospital, Mason City.
