Lucy Hiller Cleveland was a folk artist and author.  With needle and thread, cloth, leather, glass beads, and human hair she created doll-likefigures grouped in vignettes that tell stories from her own experience or express her ideas about the reform movements of the mid-nineteenthcentury.  Some vignettes provide insightful glimpses into American life before the Civil War and others portray timeless themes and human dramas.

In addition to the figures, she anonymously wrote and published more than a dozen children's books in Boston between about 1827 and 1842,  Theabolition of slavery, temperance and social benevolence were some of the topics in her writings and later in her vignettes.
