The word that gave origin to the name of the SCARTEZZINI families comes from a plant. The scientific name of this plant is Dipsacus Fullonum (click!). The common name is “Fuller's teasel”. In the text below, you will know why Scartezzini is derived from this plant that, in an Italian dialect, is called scardasso.

"One of the first operations to which the sheared wool is submitted is the carding: the flakes are combed to you with an instrument in hook form, the “scardasso”, eliminating the leftovers and transforming fibers in a continuous veil. The person in charge of such operation is called, in Italian, “cardatore” or “scardassiere” (carder); in dialect Trentino “scartezim”, “scartazin” and also (in accordance with the Azzolini) “spelaim”. In its turn, “scardasso” was the northern term in order to indicate the “thistle of the wool manufacturing” (the Dipsacus fullonum), the plant whose little incurvated terminals (in hook or nail form), was used to comb the wool. The last name is frequent in the region of Civezzano and the Valley of Adige, mainly in Trento", (from Independent Province di Trento, http://www.provincia.tn.it/).
