"One of the first operations to which the sheared wool is submitted is the carding: the flakes are combed to you with an instrument in hook form, the “scardasso”, eliminating the leftovers and transforming fibers in a continuous veil. The person in charge of such operation is called, in Italian, “cardatore” or “scardassiere” (carder); in dialect Trentino “scartezim”, “scartazin” and also (in accordance with the Azzolini) “spelaim”. In its turn, “scardasso” was the northern term in order to indicate the “thistle of the wool manufacturing” (the Dipsacus fullonum), the plant whose little incurvated terminals (in hook or nail form), was used to comb the wool.
