Bob McCarey, from near Tillsonburg, Ontario, emailed me in 2010 about his interest in Jacob Saylor who was born in PA in 1809 and settled as a merchant in Townsend Tp, Norfolk County. We have to wonder if this Jacob has any connection Peter Saylor, b. 1794 in PA and who settled in Willoughby Tp on the Niagara River.

Bob is a descendant of Emiline Augusta Saylor who was born in in 1854 in Townsend Township. Bob had good reason to believe she is a daughter of Jacob Saylor. In March 2014, Lisa Eschenburg found the death certificate for Emiline and indeed she is the dau. of Jacob Saylor and his wife, Mary Bradley.

The purpose of this web page is to collect as much as possible about Jacob Saylor.

With the advent of Y-DNA testing it would be great if a male Saylor descendants of Peter and Jacob Saylor got involved with the Saylor DNA Project.

EMILINE AUGUSTA SAYLOR
The information below is from Bob McCarey via several emails and edited a little bit and the death certificate below is from Lisa Eschenburg.

Emiline Saylor's obituary mentions that she was born Emeline Agusta Saylor, on Nov 6, 1854 in Waterford, Ontario. Later she married Freeman McCarey / McCary on Nov 6, 1874 in Waterford, Ontario and they had seven children.

Emiline passed away Sept 18, 1925 at the age of 70 yrs at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Maud Miller in Clare, Grant Tp, Clare County, Michigan. The obituary also mentioned that she had a sister Mrs. John Yocom and brothers, Angus Saylor of Waterford, Ont., and Frank Saylor of Toledo, Ohio.

She is buried in the Cherry Grove Cemetery in Clare, Michigan. beside her husband and which has no stones. No mention of her parents names were given. I do believe that they are Jacob and Mary Saylor that were listed in the 1851 and 1861 Canada West censuses shown below.

Emiline (Saylor) McCarey/McCary parents names were Jacob Saylor Sr. from Pennsylvania and his wife Mary from Maine. The information that I had received in the past was that her last name could have been Archer or Snyder. But, when I ran across her children's death and marriage records they all had  Emiline Saylor on them. I think Mary Saylor's maiden name was Bradley and she was from the state of Maine. Mary died in Waterford, Ontario. There is a stone for Mary and it's with her daughters family; the Yocum's. I'm not sure what happened to Jacob Sr. [Bradley is now confirmed as Mary's surname.]

Emiline was married to Freeman McCarey and they had a son Arthur who died shortly after being born in Windham Twp., Norfolk Co. And then they moved to Manistee, Michigan in the late 1870's . They were listed on the 1880 census, having owned 40 acres of land in Brown Township, Manistee Co., near his cousin and Uncle.

Disappeared [who?] around 1896 after his mother moved to Manistee. She died of cancer and he left shortly after. No one in the family knew were he went too. Family thought he moved to Coldwater, Mich near Battle Creek.  Then we found him (2005) listed in 1900 census in Clare Co,. Grant Twp., Michigan. They had 5 other children all born in Michigan.
