Glossary: There are items in the book for which the meaning is not clear or well known. We offer this help.
1. Midlins - as in middlings, where there 3 grades of flour
and middlings are grade 2. (Doug Smith)
2. Vail
- leg of veal (see image 04) (Randy Saylor)
3. Gammon – a cut of bacon – (Doug Smith from Wikipedia)
4. Dr - We think this means "Debtor"
5. Colter - The fore iron of a plow, with a sharp edge, that cuts the earth or sod. (Doug Smith)
6. Swivel Tree - Device that allows a team separately harnessed to pull a plough. (Doug Smith)
7. Clevis - A straight clevis looks like the letter C, with holes at each end; when you insert the clevis pin, you create a D. with the clevis able to rotate about the axis of the pin. (Wikipedia)
8. Wedge [see: weg, wegge] - a metal pointed wedge
9. Rivet [see ribbet] - steel pin hammered on both sides
Plough parts – As a blacksmith, James Noxon mentions a number of parts of the plough that he repairs or makes.
For the story of the provenance of the book see the James Noxon page.
