WHY I AM INTERESTED IN THIS FAMILY:
There are two Fairman puzzles that have motivated this web page.
1. To fit Mary Ann Fairman (1833 - 1911) into the Fairman family.
2.  To identify an earlier Mary Fairman who married Cornelius Kelly circa 1820's. This puzzle was solved and she is the daughter of William Fairman below.

The main family considered as possible progenitors of these two women is that of John Fairman UE and his wife Elizabeth Robertson who settled in Thurlow Township. Most of the information below is from Peter
Johnson, friend, loyalist expert, reenactor, past President of the United Empire Loyalist Association of Canada.

1. OVERVIEW
Puzzle 1: Peter's current theory is that Maryann is the illegitmate dau’r of Nancy Ann FAIRMAN c1818. Nancy was a teenager in 1833, and married John BARNUM in 1838. Location is good. Timing is good. The fact that so little info was passed down regarding Maryann suggests either lack of knowledge or deliberate silence.

Puzzle 2: Solved in March 2014, the marriage record was found that solves this puzzle. See below.

For a time Peter considered that George (below) and 2nd wife Mary, (who died by 1836) might be the parents of his Maryann FAIRMAN 1833, but George's will has surfaced and she is simply not there. It also, by the way, means that the Mary FAIRMAN who married Cornelius KELLY is also not George's daughter.

2. JOHN FAIRMAN Sr UE and his family

John FAIRMAN Sr. UE c1749-1826 married Elizabeth Robertson*. This John FAIRMAN resided in Thurlow Tp.
Issue:
  1. Nancy Ann FAIRMAN c1776-1844 m John HOWELL UE. Settled in Sophiasburgh Tp.
  2. John FAIRMAN Jr. c1777-1858 m Sarah ALTON 1792-1883. Settled in Sophiasburgh Tp. John buried at Big Island Cem. Sarah buried at Consecon Cem.
  3. Robert FAIRMAN m Ann McKEE
  4. Catherine FAIRMAN (not proven to be a dau'r but could be) Had two illegimate children 1803, 1805 with Johannes CRONKHITE.
  5. Hugh FAIRMAN 1781-1863 m Anna MARSHALL 1791-1866. Settled in Thurlow Tp. Buried at Victoria Cem. Thurlow Tp.
  6. George FAIRMAN 1783/84- 1851  m(1) Rebecca c1786-1823 m(2) 1829 Mary CAMPBELL m(2) Sarah (McCURDY) BOARDMAN c1793-1864. Settled in Sidney Tp. George & Sarah buried at Vanderwater Cem.
  7. Henry R. FAIRMAN b 1788 m Harriett PALMER. Res. Leeds Co ON
  8. David FAIRMAN c1790 m(1) Susanna ROBERTSON DUE d 1835/39 m(2) 1840 Jane (TURNER) REYNOLDS 1804- res. Seymour Tp. Northumberland Co ON
  9. Thomas FAIRMAN b by 1796 m 1815 Anna HUFFMAN
  10. Richard FAIRMAN res. Thurlow Tp. Not proven a son but could be.

The confirmed children of John & Elizabeth FAIRMAN UE are largely through Petitions, although a baptism exists for Henry 1788. Of the 10, only Catherine and Richard are speculative rather than proven.

3. The George FAIRMAN Branch

George FAIRMAN 1783/84- 1851 resided in Sidney Tp. His first wife Rebecca died during childbirth in 1823. He married Mary CAMPBELL in 1829 and he is buried with third wife Sarah (McCURDY) BOARDMAN at Vanderwater Cem. in Sidney Tp.

Children by Rebecca:

  1. Lenora FAIRMAN 1816-1904 m James C. MORDEN resided Sidney Tp
  2. Angelina FAIRMAN
  3. Stephen S. FAIRMAN
  4. Daniel FAIRMAN
  5. Richard Nugent FAIRMAN b 1823 d 1823.
Children by Mary CAMPBELL
  1. Walter Scott FAIRMAN c1831. d 1858 in Kentucky
Children by Sarah (McCURDY) BOARDMAN
  1. Elizabeth FAIRMAN 1837/38 m Ridley HERMAN
It is possible that Angelina, Stephen or Daniel may be with 2nd wife Mary rather than Rebecca, but I am inclined to think they are from the first marriage. For a time I considered that George and 2nd wife Mary, (who died by 1836) might be the parents of my Maryann FAIRMAN 1833, but George's will has surfaced and she is simply not there. It also, by the way, means that the Mary FAIRMAN who married Cornelius KELLY is also not George's daughter.

4. The David FAIRMAN Branch
David FAIRMAN lived in Seymour Tp not so far from Murray Tp. His first wife was Susanna ROBERTSON DUE and they had the following family, of which all but the eldest was baptized on the same date in 1838 through St. Thomas, Belleville.
  1. Nancy Ann FAIRMAN c1818 m 1838 John BARNUM. Settled in Haldimand Co. ON. Widow Nancy in Tuscola Co MI by 1880
  2. William Henry FAIRMAN 1823
  3. Martha Jane FAIRMAN 1826-1917 m George W. RYCKMAN. Settled in Lambton Co ON
  4. Leonard Kellog FAIRMAN 1829
  5. Benjamin George FAIRMAN 1832 - 1900+  m Laura.  Went by “George” Settled in MI
  6. Sarah Maria FAIRMAN  b. 23 Feb 1835 - d. 9 Feb 1909; m. 30 Sept 1850 to Major William Henry Daniel in Kincardine. [Thanks to Lynda Daniel - Porter for this.]
David FAIRMAN married (2) in 1840 to Jane (TURNER) REYNOLDS and had two more children, one of whom is Peter FAIRMAN 1841-1916 of Percy Tp.

Maryann FAIRMAN (1833 - 1911) is clearly not a dau’r of David and Susannah because she would have been baptized with the others in 1838 had she been.

5. William FAIRMAN

I believe the William FAIRMAN who had a child in 1794 was not of the John FAIRMAN family but William FAIRMAN veteran of the 29th Reg't (a British Regular). I think he is the same William who married again a Phoebe HARRIS and had more children. [Peter Johnson]

MYRES FAIRMAN
Fairman, Myres, 19, Sidney, lot 35, Con 2, removed
[The "Myres Fairman" in this list is actually Adam Henry Meyers FAIRMAN born 1805 son of Hugh FAIRMAN hence a grandson of John FAIRMAN UE. Named after the German settler, Adam Henry Meyers, from Hanover rather than Capt. Meyers. All indications are he went by 'Meyers' as his first name. Found his marriage to a CANNIFF last week.]
