From the notebook of Albert E. Sayer (senior), a description of his 1904 voyage from England to Canada with his wife (Jane "Jin" Bassett), and presumably their children Elsie Jane and Albert Edward. Arrived at Liverpool 5-30. Drove to Hotel in Brake had breakfast 6-30. Went for a walk round Liverpool until 10-30 then we went by Brake to the landing stage then the tender took us off to the ship. We started on our voyage about 4-30. Nice weather first 2 days (Tues and Wed). Thursday and Friday very squally. Jin was sick on Thurs but we have both been very well. Satur and Sun was very foggy. We paid ?? each on Sunday and we had a first class dinner which was nice. On Monday we saw an iceberg. Arrived at Quebec 4-30. We had a walk around Quebec. Went up the heights. Saw the monument of general Wolfe. Got in the train about 8-30. We had to wait in the train till 12-30 P.M. before we started. Arrived at Montreal 8-30 A.M. We had a walk around the town. Had boots cleaned, shave and cut. Left at 11-00 A.M. Arrived at Peterborough 10-30 P.M. Left at 11-00 P.M. Arrived at Belleville 1-50 A.M. We had to sleep in the station till about 5-00 A.M. Then we went and found out where Rev. G. Bran (?) lived. Then we went and had some breakfast and a wash. We had a job offered us in the train. |
