William Singleton Gregory [Parents] was born in 1838. He married Eveline Lee in Nov 1857. William was employed as in newspaperman and printer in Union.

Elizabeth Hoyle Rucker (in her Genealogy of William Lee I of England andof Virginia, and his Descendants) says Eveline married Sol Layne.Eveline's family did not approve of Mr. Layne, so her oldest brother hadthe marriage annulled. Eveline's cause of death, cited in the 1880Mortality Census, was obstructed bowels.

William pursued a career as a newspaperman and printer in Union, SouthCarolina while rearing a family of six children. William did not appearon the 1870 and 1880 census of Union County, but he did show up in theGreenville, South Carolina City Directory in 1880. He is listed as aprinter who was employed with the Baptist Courier. He disappears afterthe 1883-84 Directory.

In 1880, William and Eveline's children are in the home of Berry W. Lee,Eveline's oldest brother. They were: States Rights; William E.; MichaelLee; Robert Earl; Minnie E.; and Carrie V.

Eveline Lee was born on 15 Nov 1831. She died on 6 Oct 1879. The cause of death was obstructed bowels. She married William Singleton Gregory in Nov 1857.

Hamp, along with older brothers, Robert J. and David C., enlisted earlyin the Confederate Army. He was a Private with Company F, 41st Regiment,Alabama Infantry Volunteers. His confederate Register Company Muster Roll(dated January and February 1863) states: "Remarks: Died 17 January 1863.He is the third son of C. Gerard Gregory to die in the Civil War."

Hamp is mentioned many times in David C. Gregory's letters to his wife,Martha Ann. Robert J. sent a letter to David C. upon Hamp's death,saying, "Hamp had four dollars and a half, and I sold his clothes whichmade the balance." Robert J. was sending the money home to their father,C.   M iv Richard V. Gregory 1 was born in 1837 in Union County, South Carolina. He died on 18 Nov 1862 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The cause of death was typhoid fever. Richard was employed as in DHHFFAHGUA, ATAO2, he was an Overseer in Pickensville.

He enlisted, along with his brothers, in the Confederate Army (Company F,41st Regiment, Alabama Infantry). Dick was faithful in sending money hometo his father and mother. He was often mentioned, with great concern forhis safety and whereabouts, by his half-brother, David.

Dick died of typhoid fever in Chattanooga on 18 November 1862. TheConfederate Register states: "Amount of money left, $31.10. Effects:Sundries." His older half-brother, Robert J., never found his clothes.Since he died of typhoid, it is possible that they were burned. (source:Gregory Family Book, Chapter 6 Part 23)

There is some confusion about his birthplace. In the 1850 census, hisparents list a Georgia birthplace, but later information places his birthin St. Clair or Pickens County, Alabama.

Along with his brothers, Jason enlisted in the Confederate Army, CompanyF, 41st Regiment, Alabama Infantry, in April 1862. He did not longsurvive. He died at Charleston, Tennessee according to the ConfederateRegister. His commanding officer, Captain Benjamin F. Eddins, said hedied 13 July 1862; he was 21 years of age when he enlisted, 5'9", oflight complexion, blue-eyed and light haired; and that the ConfederateStates owed him $62.76.

Jason Gerard's father appeared before the Pickens County Justice of thePeace, W.P. Lavender, on 22 October 1862 to make claim for the pay dueJason. The Confederate States settled this claim on 4 August 1864 fromthe Comptroller's Office as follows:
