The last page of grandpa [William Chaney, 1817-1899] Chaney's letter dated Dec ------- reads: Jo [Josiah Chaney, 1852-1901] I don't see any prospect ahead for us for the [coming] year. It will take more than the rent to do the [fixing] that will have to be done this spring. Land is gone down in [value] to half what it was ten years ago. 100-30- acres of Bent Broadus' place with the house brought 8.30 this [spring]. Fowler last fall sold for 8 hundred, I don't think in its present condition would bring more than 3.50. We could sell all for about 4 hundred. I know something will have to be done by some of you. Your mother [Nancy Keene Chaney, 1824-1904] is not [managing] right. I believe she would be willing to live with you or Ed [Edwin Frank Chaney, 1854-1923].
Wm Chaney (carbon of his signature)According to a letter written by his son William, William Cheney was raised in or near Irvine, Estill County, Ky. He came from Irvine to Richmond, Madison County in 1830. The letter says that the first six children were born in Richmond, the family moved to the country in January, 1864, and the last four children were born there. According to the birth dates of the children, however, there were seven children born by January, 1864, so possibly only the last three were born after the family moved away from Richmond.
