Reunion of Shields Family Held Sunday

Mr. and Mrs. William I. Shields, {address deleted for privacy}, and their family held their annual family picnic Sunday evening at the South Mountain Fairgrounds. Eight of their children and 24 grandchildren attended.

Thos present from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Walters (the former Della Shields) and children, Barbara and Marshall, Harrisburg; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Snyder (the former Mildred Shields) and children, Kenneth, Ralph, Joyce, John, Caroline, Susan and Louise, Hanover; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Millard (the former Anna Shields) and children, Stephen, Sharon and Sally, Ft. Wayne, Indiana; and Mr. and Mrs. Richard McLaughlin (the former Leoda Shields) and children, Karen and Ricky, Moscow, Idaho.

Those unable to attend were a daughter, Mrs. Frank Davilla (the former Nancy Shields) and her son, Daniel, Norfolk, Va. Other grandchildren not present were Earl Snyder Jr., Hanover; Robert Fox Jr., with the U.S. Navy; and Mr. and Mrs. William L. Meals Jr. (the former Virginia Fox) Frankfurt, Germany.

Mrs. William L. Meals Jr. and son, William L. 3rd, returned by plane from Germany several days ago after a stay of more than a year. They will be joined in Gettysburg in the near future by Mrs. Meals husband, who has been stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army about 18 months.

Mrs. Meals, who is staying with her Mother, Mrs. Robert E. Fox, {address deleted for privacy}, returned to America earlier than her husband because of the cold weather in Europe this winter. She said that “fuel was unobtainable and the water froze in the house.”

SP3 Meals is the son of Mrs. William L. Meals, {address deleted for privacy}.

On Christmas evening, Mr. and Mrs. William I. Shields, {address deleted for privacy}, welcomed home 55 children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for the annual family Christmas party. Eleven members of the family were unable to attend.

There was group singing of Christmas songs and entertainment by the grandchildren followed by the exchanging of gifts by the children. Mr. and Mrs. Shields then play Santa for the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A buffet of cold turkey “with all the trimmings” was served.

J.; Mr. and Mrs. Sebastian Hafer and children, Jane, Sebastian, Susan and Robbie, Camp Hill; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Millard and children, Stephen, Sharon, Sally and Patty, Chatham, N.Y.; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Davilla and children, Danny, Mike and Melanie, York; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Snyder Jr., Hanover; Mr. and Mrs. William Meals and children, Billy and Peggy, York; Mrs. Larry (Floranna) Nicholson, Gettysburg, Miss Susie Stambaugh, Hanover, was a guest.

Former Residents Now at {address deleted for privacy}

A former Gettysburg resident and her husband are now living at {address deleted for privacy}, the Moose Lodge home for its elderly members and their wives near Jacksonville, Fla.

Mr. and Mrs. Earl S, Miller, Hanover, flew Thursday to {address deleted for privacy}. They had been at Golden Age Nursing Home, Hanover, until arrangements were made by the Hanover Moose Lodge, of which Miller had been a member for 30 years, for them to go to {address deleted for privacy}.

Miller, who is 74, is afflicted with emphysema but is ambulatory and able to care for himself. His wife, the former Ruth E. Shields, Gettysburg, suffered a slight stroke several months ago which left her with partial paralysis of the right arm. She is, however, able to care for most of her needs. She is 63 years old.

Both were twice married. Miller has a son by his previous marriage, Elwood P. Miller, 33, {address deleted for privacy}, Littlestown. Mrs. Miller had two sons by her previous marriage and one, William L. Meckley, was killed in the Korean Conflict. He was highly decorated as a member of the armed forces. The other, Donald C. Meckley, resides at Hanover {address deleted for privacy}.
