On Tuesday Samuel Hull and Charles Shields and their families of Roxbury, Franklin County, were crossing the mountain to attend the funeral of Mrs. Laughlin in Amberson’s Valley. Mr. Shields, with his wife and child were ahead, driving one horse in a carriage, and Mr. Hull and family following, driving two horses. When descending one of the steep hills on the mountain road, the tongue strap on the rear double team gave way, causing the horses to run. The team crashed into Mr. Shields conveyance smashing it down, the horses being literally on top of the foremost carriage. Not one of the occupants were injured. By the breaking down of the vehicle the hind leg of the horse was broken supposed to have been caught under the axle. |

Produce Truck Upsets
But Solomon Meckley, Hanover, Escapes Injury at Road Intersection near Aspers, Monday Tried to Pass on Curve A truck driven by Solomon Meckley, of Hanover, was damaged, but the driver escaped injury, when the machine left the highway and upset near the intersection of the Carlisle and Aspers Road, Monday afternoon. Produce, with which the truck was loaded, was scattered in all directions when the machine upset. Meckley, a produce dealer and World War veteran, was driving south on the Carlisle road and according to the account of the accident he gave to Patrolman C. W. Achenbach, of the motor patrol sub-station here, his truck was forced off the highway by another south-bound truck of the Loose-Wiles Baking Company, Harrisburg, driven by John Sweger, of Newport, when the latter turned from the highway into the road to Aspers. According to Patrolman Achenbach, Meckley would not have been forced from the highway had he not tried to pass the baking company truck just before it swung into the Aspers Road. |

W. I. Shields Appointed New Health Officer for the County
Settling a contest that has been under wide discussion since last fall, an appointment was mailed in Harrisburg Tuesday morning to William I. Shields, former Adams County Treasurer, naming him health officer of Adams County. The appointment will be effective immediately at a salary of $1,840 per year. The same mail bears notice of dismissal of Harry Bucher, Biglerville democrat, who has held the post for the past three years. Sharp political repercussions were expected as word of the appointment spread here this afternoon. The Gettysburg Times learned from an unofficial spokesman for the G.O.P. patronage board of Adams County that the board had not endorsed Shields for the post, but had recommended the appointment of John S. Ogden, Pinchot campaign manager in Adams county last year and a defeated candidate for treasurer of Adams County. The Shields appointment was announced from the office of the state secretary of Health at Harrisburg Tuesday afternoon. The contest between Shields, who had the backing of United States Senator James J. Davis, and Ogden, who was reported generally to be backed by the opposing S. S. Lewis camp, has attracted wide attention throughout the state. Lewis, a resident of York, is lieutenant-governor of Pennsylvania. |

Filipinos Use Oxen On Farms Writes R. E. Fox
Natives in the Philippines, where Pvt. Robert E. Fox, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. William I. Shields, {address deleted for privacy}, is now stationed, use oxen to work the soil, according to a letter received by Mr. and Mrs. Shields. Private Fox reached the Pacific recently by way of Panama and Pearl Harbor. “The last time we got on the ship was the 20th day of September and we did not get off until October 20th,” the letter said. “I was sure glad to get off the ship at Manila. There we were landed on landing barges and rode on them for just about two hours, then got off and got on a train. “We had to stand in the cars or else sit on the floor. The train did not move for an hour and a half, then when it did start it just crawled along. It took us four hours to get to the camp which I am at now. On top of that, it was raining too. “Yesterday we had two hours of physical exercise in the morning, then in the afternoon we had a five-mile hike around the camp. They use oxen to work the soil in the islands. They use one at a time to plow. They just run furrow about 12 inches apart and then use a bamboo tooth harrow to work it. “I wish you could see the Spanish girls that are in Colon and Panama. They sure are the limit. There is no law there so they do anything at all, do not stop at anything. “When we stopped at Pearl Harbor we were not left off the ship. I sure would of liked to take a tour of the island. I saw a lot of ships that were sunk during the attack there. Some of them were half sunk, others had only the tops of the masts appearing above the water. “The ocean from Panama to Pearl Harbor was terribly rough. We went through two storms. After we left Pearl Harbor the ocean was just as calm as if we were riding in a new car, just as smooth, no waves at all. “I hope my orders some soon so as to get out of this camp. There is nothing here. The PX only has soft drinks. They have a little candy, not much variety. It is terrible hot here in the daytime and real cool at night. I sleep between wool blankets at night.” |

Desert Storm Salute - Capt. David Fox (photo)
Recently, Captain David Fox, formerly of Gettysburg, was promoted to company commander of the 143rd Signal Battalion based in Frankfurt, Germany. On Christmas Day, after many months of hard training, Capt. Fox, 31, and his unit flew to Saudi Arabia as pare of Operation Desert Shield – now Operation Desert Storm. Capt. Fox graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1977. Jeffrey Fox of Gettysburg, said his only brother has been in the Army since 1979 when he joined after graduating from Vale Technical Institute near Pittsburgh, where he studied automotive mechanics. In 1982, Captain Fox graduated from the Army’s Officer Candidate School. Capt. Fox is the son of Robert W. Fox of Littlestown and Doris Sillik Fox of St. Petersburg, Florida. His grandparents are Robert and Eleanor Fox of Gettysburg. Jeffrey Fox quietly admitted that his brother is stationed “on the frontlines” in Saudi Arabia, about 35 kilometers south of Iraq. Prior to joining the military Capt. Fox had worked for a period of time at the O. C. Rice Company in Biglerville. During his military career, Capt. Fox has been stationed in Germany, South Korea and Fort Huachuca in Arizona. Family members say that in each of the letters that have been received, Capt. Fox writes that he hope that when the troops finally come home from the war, they will not have to return to the “Vietnam-type atmosphere” of many years ago. The Times salutes Capt. David A. Fox and all those serving in the Middle East. |
