Mr. and Mrs. Shields Observe Twenty-Fifth Wedding Anniversary
Former County Treasurer and Mrs. William I. Shields, {address deleted for privacy}, observed their silver wedding anniversary Thursday. On Wednesday evening, children of the couple and a number of friends surprised them with an anniversary party at the Shields home. Mr. and Mrs. Shields were married on March 24, 1913, in the parsonage of the Reformed Church, then located on Carlisle Street. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Dr. Barkley, then pastor of the local Reformed congregation. The couple went to housekeeping in Media, Pa., where Mr. Shields was engaged in construction work. He ended a four-year term as treasurer of Adams county on the first Monday of this year. Walters – Shields
Miss Della Mae Shields, daughter of former Adams County Treasurer and Mrs. William I. Shields, {address deleted for privacy}, became the bride of Marshall T. Walters, son of Mrs. Maude Walters, Biglerville, October 25th in the Arendtsville Lutheran Church. The single ring ceremony was performed by candlelight by the Rev. George H. Berkheimer, the pastor. Members of the families and close friends witnessed the marriage. The couple was unattended. The bride’s father, who is republican chairman of Adams County, gave his daughter in marriage. The bride wore a gown of white moiré filet fashioned on princess lines with long sleeves and a shoulder length veil fastened with orange blossoms. She carried a bouquet of white chrysanthemums and baby’s breath. The church was decorated with ferns, yellow chrysanthemums and baby’s breath. Before the ceremony, the church organist, Mrs. John A/ Hauser, played, “Oh Promise Me,” “I Love You Truly,” and “Alba.” She played the bridal chorus from “Lohengrin” by Wagner as the processional and after the ceremony used the Mendelssohn wedding march. There was a reception at the home of the bride’s parents which was attended by members of the immediate families after which the couple left for a short wedding trip. The bride is a graduate of Gettysburg High School in the class of 1936 and for the last three years has been employed by Kents Premier Cleaners, {address deleted for privacy}. Mr. Walters was graduated from Biglerville High School in 1935 and is employed by the firm of Rice, Trew and Rice, Biglerville. Before an altar banked with yellow and white pompoms and ferns, Miss Nancy Joyce Shields, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William I. Shields, {address deleted for privacy}, became the bride of Frank Davilla, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Davilla Sr., New York City, Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock in a ceremony performed by the Rev. Dr. Ralph R. Gresh in St. James Lutheran Church. Richard B. Shade, organist, accompanied the vocalist Miss Virginia Fox, niece of the bride, who sang, "Oh Promise Me," "Through the Years," and "O Perfect Love." Mr. Shade who played traditional wedding marches, also offered "The Lord's Prayer," during the ceremony. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a full-length white net gown over taffeta fashioned with an embroidered bodice, scalloped neckline and a princess style skirt accented with embroidered net panels. She carried a colonial bouquet of white pompoms designed with a center of red roses and tied with white ribbon streamers. Miss Joan Rubright, Frackville, Pa., the maid of honor, wore a shrimp-colored waltz-length gown of nylon net and lace. Her bolero jacket was of lace, designed with a Mandarin collar, and she wore matching shrimp-colored mitts. Her headdress was a crown of autumn flowers and she carried a matching bouquet. Joseph Ciciari, Jamesburg, N. J., was the best man. After the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride. Upon returning from a week's visit in New York City the couple will reside at Portsmouth, Va. The bride who graduated from Gettysburg High School in June, has been employed in the Department of Public Instruction, Harrisburg. The bridegroom, who attended schools in New York City, is serving with the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. New Jersey recently returned from a nine-months tour of duty in Korean waters. Wedding guests were in attendance from Hanover, Harrisburg, Altoona, New York City and New Jersey. |

Local Couple Weds Today In Xavier Church
Miss Virginia Eleanor Fox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Fox, {address deleted for privacy}, became the bride of William Louis Meals Jr., son of Mrs. William L. Meals, {address deleted for privacy}, and the late Attorney Meals, this morning at 10:30 o’clock at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in a double-ring ceremony performed by the pastor, Rev. Fr. Anthony F. Kane. Wedding music by Rossini was played by Mrs. George F. Eberhart, church organist. Pink and white snapdragons and gladioli decorated the altar. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a white ballerina length gown fashioned with a fitted lace bodice and a full net skirt. Her fingertip veil was attached to a pearl and lace trimmed tiara and she carried a Bible and a white orchid. Miss Floranna Doris Fox, {address deleted for privacy}, sister of the bride, was the maid of honor. She wore a pink ballerina length gown designed with a lace bodice and lace skirt. He carries a colonial bouquet of mixed flowers and wore a matching floral headdress. Floranna Fox Is Married To L. J. Nicholson

Nicholson, son of George W, and the late Mary Nicholson, Hanover, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Hanover. The altar was decorated with spring flowers. Traditional wedding music was played. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a ballerina length gown of white embroidered organdy in three tiers, with a fingertip veil from a crown of sequins. She carried a white orchid surrounded with carnations and satin streamers. Mrs. Virginia E. Meals, York, sister of the bride, was matron of honor. She wore a mint green chiffon gown with yellow accessories. Her yellow flowered hat held a short veil. She carried a colonial bouquet of yellow rosebuds surrounded by white carnations and satin streamers. George Nicholson, Upper Darby, brother of the groom, was best man. The bride’s mother wore a slate gray organza dress with a pink accessories. She wore a corsage of pink rosebuds. Immediately following the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride after which they left on a week’s honeymoon to New England. For her going away outfit the bride chose a blue two-piece ensemble with a white orchid corsage. Upon their return they will reside at the home of the bride until the groom is discharged from the navy. The bride is a 1956 graduate of Gettysburg High School, is employed as secretary to Sterling Musselman at the Nationwide Insurance Co. Seventy-four were in attendance, including nine children, 36 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The nine children were: Eleanor, Mrs. Robert Fox, Edward L., Gettysburg; Mildred, Mrs. Earl Snyder, Hanover; Della, Mrs. Marshall Walters, Harrisburg; William W., Chambersburg; Leota, Mrs. Richard McLaughlin, Woodbury, N.J.; Helen, Mrs. Sebastian Hafer, Camp Hill, Pa.; Anne, Mrs. Richard Millard, Chatham, N.Y.,and Nancy Mrs. Frank Devila, York {address removed for privacy}. Other relatives and friends were present from Altoona, Harrisburg and Chambersburg. A buffet luncheon was served and the couple received many gifts for their golden anniversary. They were married March 24, 1913, at the parsonage of Trinity Reformed Church on Carlisle St., by the Rev. Dr. T. J. Barkley, the bride’s pastor. They went on a honeymoon to Altoona and then to Media where they made their home. The have resided here for many years. Mr. Shields is a former Adams County treasurer and formerly was the county GOP chairman. |

Bender’s Lutheran Church, near Biglerville, was the scene of a wedding September 12, when Miss Linda Kay Gantz, {address removed for privacy}, and James David Fox, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fox, {address deleted for privacy}, exchanged vows before an altar decorated with white chrysanthemums and greens. Rev. Warren Johnson officiated at the double ring, candlelight ceremony at 8.pm. Miss Sharon Rouzer was the organist. The soloist was Mrs. William Meals Jr. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a floor length gown of white silk organza with a sheath skirt, fitted bodice, and yoked neckline of venice lace. A detachable watteau train of chapel length completed the gown, and she carried a bouquet of white pompoms with a lift out corsage. Her bouffant veil of silk illusion was held in place with a head piece of petals and bows. Miss Ellen Gantz, sister of the bride, served as matron of honor, Miss Kim Fox, sister of the groom was junior bridesmaid. Both were attired in floor length gowns of blue satin back crepe trimmed with white cotton lace. They carried yellow and white pompoms. Lawrence Clapsaddle, Orrtanna, was best man. Ushers were William Meals Jr., York and Lawrence Nicholson, York and Daniel Callahan, Bonneauville. A reception was held in the church social room. Following a honeymoon to the Great Smokey National Park, Tenn., and Mammoth Cave, Ky., the couple are residing at {address deleted for privacy}. Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Fox of {address deleted for privacy}, Gettysburg, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary January 27. A dinner and family reunion with 125 people attending, was held at the Elks Club. The dinner was arranged by the couples children. The Fox’s received a letter from President and Mrs. Reagan congratulating them on their anniversary. |
