Cpl. Meckley was Slain in Red Trap

Cpl. William L. Meckley, 22, whose death in action in Korea, November 21, was officially reported December 3, died while saving lives of other soldiers after being ambushed on a volunteer patrol mission.

Word of the manner in which the Hanover soldier met a heroic death has been received by his mother, Mrs. Ruth E. Meckley Miller, Hanover, from her son's platoon sergeant, M. Sgt. Cecil L, Jenkins. Mrs. Miller is the former Ruth Shields, of Gettysburg.

Sgt. Jenkins letter, written, in Korea, revealed that on November 21 a call was received for a squad from his platoon to contact the Republic of Korea marines and guard an engineer outfit moving to the front.

"Although it wasn't Meckley's squad that was picked to go, he came to me and pleaded to go along." Sgt. Jenkins wrote. "They walked into an ambush, losing two of five jeeps and all four of the trucks.

"Meckley, and this is a first-hand report from his squad leader, had a chance to leave on one of the three jeeps that got out, but he would not leave until the men who were less fortunate than he. He directed fire and aided the wounded, and in so doing saved the lives of several men, In his numerous trips to save other men, he was critically wounded himself, but refused aid and made other men get out of that place.

"I know it is sad, but he died fighting for his country, and his friends and I know he went like her wanted to go. You have every right in the world to be the proudest mother that ever lived, His name, and his courage, shall forever live in the hearts of the boys who knew."

Cpl. Meckley, who had joined the navy at the age of seventeen and served during the latter stages of World War II, joined the army July 6, 1949.

CPL. Meckley Is Given DSC Posthumously

Mrs. Ruth M. Miller, {address deleted for privacy}, Hanover, received the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation’s second highest military decoration, awarded posthumously to her son, Cpl. William L. Meckley, in ceremonies at 10 a.m. Saturday at Second Army Headquarters, Ft. George G. Meade, Md.

Presentation of the award, issued to Cpl. Meckley for the heroism which cost him his life in Korea on November 21, 1950, was made by Lt. Gen. Ford N. Hathaway, under whose command Meckley was serving. Lt. Gen. Floyd L, Parks, commander of the Second Army, attended the ceremony, held in his office.

Mrs. Miller, is the former Ruth Shields, of Gettysburg, sister of William I. Shields, {address deleted for privacy}

Cpl. Meckley was cited for extraordinary heroism in action in the vicinity of Ma-jon-ni, Korea. The citation read in part:

Caught in Ambush

“While on a combat patrol, corporal Meckley, assistant squad leader, Company B. 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Division, was attempting to establish contact with a South Korean marine battalion that had been cut off by the enemy.

“The company was ambushed by a large force of about 900 North Korean guerillas and in the first burst of gunfire several men were wounded before the squad could take cover.

“Corporal Meckley left his position of cover, exposing himself to the enemy fire, and went to the aid of one of the wounded men. Although he aided the man to cover, he was wounded but refused first aid and immediately returned to help other wounded. In doing this, he received his second and third wounds.

“When withdrawal orders were received, Corporal Meckley was unable to walk and voluntarily remained behind to cover their withdrawal. It was then that he got his fourth and fatal wound.

“His intrepid and resolute actions enabled the entire unit to successfully withdraw from the ambushed position and made possible the safe evacuation of many wounded men. Corporal Meckley’s extraordinary heroism reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the service.”

Cpl. Meckley’s father is Solomon Meckley, Hanover.

The young soldier had served in World War II as a member of the U.S. Navy. He enlisted at York March 4, 1945, after leaving Eichelberger Senior High School.
