Jane Ailene Henderson (1824 - 1898)

Family Record

Note: I received copies of this family record with the pages stapled together into several family groups. I have made a separate web page for each stapled group and have tried to format these web pages similar to the appearance of the typed pages. Some of the pages were typed in a small type font and the others in a large type font -- it appears to me to be 2 separate records, the older being typed with the larger type font (ca the older 10 point "pica" type font), the more recent being typed with the smaller type font (ca the older 12 point "elite" type font).

Both types were interleaved together, making the records appear duplicated; but I believe it is just an older and newer record. For ease of reading on these pages, I have sized the type font according to how it appears on the page & in addition, colored the large type font yellow.

My notes or items I had difficulty reading are enclosed in curly brackets { }.

Handwritten notes on my copy are indicated by being enclosed in square brackets [ ] and colored light purple.

Jane Ailene Henderson

Not much is known about Jane Henderson but we see her husbands name of {sic} a lot of the Henderson legal papers as witnesses {sic}.

Alexander Cowan Shields probably served in the Civil War.  We find an A. C. Shiieds {sic s/b Shields} served in a company from Mecklenburg County.  Company K-56th Regiment.  This is possibly Alexander Cowan Shields.

James Henderson and A. C. Shields witnessed several land trades between William Lossen Henderson and Hugh Elam Henderson.  So we presume they were a rather close family.

In the 1860 Census, A. Cowan Shields was listed as 34 years old, his wife 35.  Children Thomas 6, William 4 and David 2.  He listed his occupation as Farmer.  Listed several spaces down on the census we find Elam Henderson and William Henderson.  This indicated they lived in the same general area -- West. Meck. County.

Alexander Cowan Shields (Called Cowan) was said to be a very distinguished looking man with white hair and white mustache and walked very straight, even in his older years.

A niece {sic} remembers going to her Uncle Cowans house when she was a child and hearing a tale about her Uncle Cowan shooting a hold {sic s/b hole} in the house.  It seems that a black man was breaking in the house and had gone upstairs to the girls bedroom, but Uncle Cowan took out after the man with his shot gun and shot a hole in the ceiling while shooting at the man.

The old Shields home has long since gone and all the old people have passed away, so not much is know {sic} about the Shields.
