We know that Hugh Elam Henderson served in the Civil War. A descendant of Hugh Elam Henderson said that he was a guard for the Union soldiers in Salisbury. While in service Elam contacted {sic} T. B. and was ill for a number of years.
We see by the census that Elam Henderson was living near his brother Williams {sic} and his sister Jane Shield {sic s/b Shields} in 1860. He is listed as a farmer.
Elam and his wife were members of Ramah Pres. Church and are listed on the session book. They have a child buried there but his burial place is unknown.
A granddaughter of Elam described him as being 6 ft. tall, dark brown curly hair and dark eyes.
Hugh Elam (called Elam) has many descendants in the Huntersville, N. C. area, one of which was postmistress of Huntersville Post Office for many years. (This information furnished by Katie Hair Cathey (Mrs. Adrian Cathey, {street address removed for privacy}, Charlotte, N. C.) Mrs. Hair is a granddaughter of Hugh Elam Henderson.
