Pilot Grove #1
Cemetery
(Also Known as
Corner Church Baptist)
Lincoln Township, Daviess County, Missouri
Earliest tombstone: 1880
Latest tombstone: Still in use
About
the Name:
In
transcription for this cemetery, the Gallatin
Chapter of the DAR states that "John T.
Herndon donated 2 acres of land in 1880 for the
site of Pilot Grove Cemetery and Church. He was
the 3rd person buried there -- his mother was the
2nd."
Kevin Sutton writes about the church in
conjunction with this cemetery: "Locally it is called the Corner Church
but it is officially Pilot Grove Baptist Church.
The original church burned in the late 1980's and
a new church was built. When I say original I
mean the original that I knew. The building that
burned was not nearly as old as some of the
graves in the cemetery. There had to be an older
church at some point." |

(1) The
1876 Plat book plots no cemetery
nor church but does show the landowner as J. T. Herndon.
On page 12, it does elaborate that "Pilot Grove
Baptist Church"
was established in 1840 with Wm. Mickles as first
minister and that in 1876 this church had 134
members--more than the other two churches of the township
combined.
(2) The 1898 Plat book plots a Baptist Church with a
cemtery adjacent.
(3) The 1916 Plat book plots a church with a cemetery
adjacent.

references the cemetery.

cemetery adjacent.
