| Name/History | The cemetery lies near Muddy Creek which flows into the Grand River two miles downstream. The cemetery is also called just plain "Muddy." Contributor Jeff Stith points out the entrance sign says "Mudd_ Cemetery," the final "y" having fallen off. The 1883/1893 Permanant Record of Deaths points to STOUT surname burials in a Stout Cemetery, referring also to this cemetery. STOUTs were among the first, if not the first burials in this cemetery and there are several STOUTs buried there. In "History of Daviess County" (1985) p. 155 Elizabeth Jefferies writes: "Muddy or South Cemetery (an earlier name was Stout) since 1916 lies on both sides of the north-south road in Range 29, Section 20...the west side...(1876) belonged to William Wdelley [sic]...the east side...by Z. Stout." Also on this page is an entry by Paul J. Jefferies: "The Stout (Muddy) Cemetery was started long before there was a church. Around 1896, Zephiniah [sic] Stout donated the land across the road from the cemetery..." P. Jefferies continues saying the church was first called Union Chapel, changed its name to Philadelphia in 1888, burned in 1928, rebuilt as Philadelphia Free-Will Baptist Church, vandalized in 1953 and fell to ruin. History of Daviess and Gentry Counties (1922) p. 141 names this church the "Muddy (Philadelphia) Free Will Baptist church." The 1876 Daviess County Plat Book plots a cross and the word "Cem" on the west side of the road owned by "Wm Wadley" with "Z. Stout" landowner across the road. The 1898 Plat Book plots a boxed cross labeled "Cemetery" owned by L. G. Groomer on the west side with a church labeled "Union Church" on land owned by "Z. Stout" on the east side. The 1990 Plat Book indexes and correspondingly plots "Muddy Cemetery" in Section 20, T60-R29. The MO State General Highway Map (c. 1993) plots but does not name a cemetery in 20-60-29. The 1998 Plat Book incorrectly names, but does not plot, two cemeteries, in sections 20 and 15 of T60-R29 both "Muddy." For further details on the 1998 plat book error, see Valladingham Cemetery. The 1998 Plat Book also indexes, but not plot a "Muddy Church" in 20-60-29. |

Turn left (west) on route "E" and go 3 3/4 miles until 110 St.. Turn right (east) on the first road to the right which is Key. Follow 1/2 mile until the road curves to the left (north) and becomes 115th Street. The cemetery is 1/4 mile further down 115th Street on the left. An old church that used to stand across 115th from the cemetery is gone. Thanks to contributor Jeff Stith for assistance with these directions. |
