Louisiana Roots

George Rankin was born in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana. He probably was not the oldest child of Samuel Rankin and Elizabeth Richardson, but he was the oldest of their children to survive to adulthood. He had two brothers, Sanford Rankin born in 1830, and Samuel E. Rankin born in 02 December 1832. George was not more than seven years old when his father died and his mother was left a widow with three young sons to raise.

When Elizabeth Richardson Rankin married Irish immigrant Thomas McCabe, the size of the family suddenly doubled. Thomas had come to Louisiana from Ireland between 1831 and 1836 and had brought his three sons, James, Michael and Bernard with him. By 1838, the six boys were joined by a little sister, Mary Elizabeth McCabe, and by 1843 there were two more sisters: Martha Ellen and Minerva.

The Move to Missouri

Between 1846 and 1848, the Rankin-McCabe clan moved from Livingston Parish, Louisiana to Perry County, Missouri. The 1850 census, the first to identify all the family members by name, shows the McCabe family living on a farm in Bois Brule township. Besides Thomas and Elizabeth, all the younger McCabe children are listed including one-year old Thomas. Samuel E. Rankin, James and Bernard McCabe are living and working on the McCabe farm, and Sanford Rankin is working as a blacksmith in Perryville.

George Rankin is not listed in the 1850 Missouri census. It has been thought that he came to Missouri with the McCabes and was missed by the census takers, but a recently found document suggests that George was in Louisiana until after 1850.

20 March 1849, in a document filed in Livingston Parish, Thomas McCabe, "of the state of Missouri in Perry County" sold to George Rankin 316 acres for just $200. This was the same piece of property that Thomas McCabe had sold to and re-purchased from his neighbor Arnold Denker for $450 just 3 years earlier. Had the property lost half its value in that time? Or was Thomas McCabe giving his step-son a pretty good deal?

Either way, it appears that George was still in Louisiana until the early 1850's. Eventually, he left Livingston Parish and joined the rest of the family in Perry County, Missouri, and put down roots around 1856 when he married Mary Elizabeth Dean.

Family Ties

The Rankins are believed to be non-Catholics, but after moving to Perry County, that changed. Thomas McCabe and his sons were Irish, and probably Catholics. In 1852 after the Rankin-McCabe family had been here for a couple of years, all the younger McCabe children were baptized at St. Mary's Church of the Assumption in Perryville. Two of the Rankin brothers, Samuel E. and George, married Catholic women and raised their children in that religion.

In 1857, Robert Allen Rankin, the first child of George and Elizabeth Dean Rankin was born. The honor of standing as godparents to this first child was given to George's brother, Samuel E. Rankin, and his sister Mary Elizabeth McCabe. When Mary Elizabeth McCabe was married in 1860 to Thomas Brewster, George's wife Elizabeth was a witness along with William Mossy (probably the uncle of Samuel Rankin's wife, Ellen Kline).

George and Elizabeth's second child, Elizabeth Rosalia, was born in 1858. On 06 February 1859, Elizabeth gave birth to a son they named William Edwin. He was baptized in April of that year with George's sister, Martha Ellen McCabe and her husband, William Riney as sponsors. Apparently this child did not survive his first year as subsequent records for him have not been found. The following year on the exact same date, 06 Feb 1860, Elizabeth gave birth to another son. This child was christened William Edward in June of that year with the same sponsors, William Riney and Martha Ellen McCabe. In the 1860 census, the family of George and Elizabeth Rankin is living on a farm in Saline township.

In October 1863, Martha Ellen McCabe Riney and her newborn son Elias died within days of each other. Martha was barely twenty-two years-old and the family must have been extremely saddened. When George and Elizabeth Rankin's next daughter was born, she was christened Cora Martha Ann Rankin.

George and Elizabeth Dean Rankin continued living on the farm in Saline township until 1870. In October of that year, Elizabeth gave birth to a daughter. She was probably named Sarah Ann after Elizabeth's mother who had died a few years earlier. But then on 21 November 1870, the unthinkable happened. George Rankin died suddenly at the age of 41.

When one week later the new baby was baptized, she was given the name Sarah Georgia Ann, in honor of her father.

Life Without George

For the next seven years, Elizabeth remained unmarried while raising her seven children. In 1877, this item appeared in the local newspaper:

"30 November 1877 -- Married a few days since - Mr. Bernard Hagan to Mrs. Elizabeth Ranken."

Unfortunately, this marriage did not last long due to the death of Martin Bernard Hagan in 1880.

An Unlikely Marriage

In 1876, the next door neighbors of the George Rankin family were Daniel and Elizabeth Essary and their children. Daniel Essary was born in Miner County, Indiana and had come to Perry County before 1859 when he married Elizabeth Layton. In 1860, Daniel and Elizabeth Essary were living in the household of Louisa Tucker Kline, widow of David Kline. David Kline was the uncle of Samuel Rankin's wife, Ellen Kline. And in 1858, Peter Dean, Elizabeth Dean Rankin's father, was named as security in the guardianship of Louisa's minor children.

In March 1876, Daniel's wife, Elizabeth Layton Essary, died leaving him with five children.

"07 April 1876 -- Died on Monday March 27th 1876 at her home, Mrs. Esary, wife of Mr. Daniel Esary, aged about 38 years."
Source: Abstracts from the Perryville Union, 13 September 1867 - 28 December 1877; Perry County Historical Society
Just six months later, 40-year old Daniel Essary literally married the girl next door, 18 year-old Elizabeth Rosalia Rankin." He had probably seen her grow up, and figured she'd make a good step-mother for his children.
"13 October 1876 -- Married at St. Mary's Church recently - Daniel Essary to Miss Rosa Rankin."
Source: Abstracts from the Perryville Union, 13 September 1867 - 28 December 1877; Perry County Historical Society
Although a daughter, Teresa Essary was born in 1878, the marriage did not last long. Daniel and Elizabeth Rosalia Rankin were divorced, he claiming that she called him "foul names". In the 1880 census, the household of Elizabeth Dean Rankin Hagan includes daughter Elizabeth Rankin and granddaughter Teresa L. Essary.

When the 1880 census was taken in June. Mary Elizabeth Hagan is listed as a 41 year-old widow living the the Rankin children and her granddaughter. Bernard Hagan had died tragically the preceeding January.

Death from Exposure - Last Saturday week Bernard Hagan left home for St. Mary's but failed to return at night, after a diligent search his body was discovered near Clement Hagan's. Exposure is believed to have been the cause of his death. Mr. Hagan was about 55 years old.

Mary Elizabeth Dean lived another two years, then died as reported by the Union.

The burial places of George Rankin, Mary Elizabeth Dean and her 2nd husband, Bernard Hagan, are unknown at this time.
