LOCAL NEWS

RAIN. -- We were blessed with rain on Monday last. It was needed.

GEO. W. GOSTORF, ESQ., left for his home in St. Louis on Tuesday evening last.

MR. WM. FURTH left for St. Louis on Saturday morning last, but has since returned.

FRANK COBB, ESQ., has just opened a saloon on the northwest corner of the public square, and is ready and willing to wait upon customers.

HARD TIMES. -- Everybody is now grumbling about the hard times. -- Well, the times are had, but after Greeley and Brown are elected it will be reversed.

RAILROAD. -- What has become of the Iron Mountain and Grand Tower Railroad? Has it “busted up,” or has it “gone under?” we hear but little about it.

MORE CANDIDATES. -- It will be seen that more candidates have announced themselves for office to-day. One for judge of the County Court, one for Assessor, and one for Public Administrator.

THE PERRYVILLE SCHOOL. -- This school will terminate on the next Saturday. The children will give an exhibition on that day at the Public School House. The exercises will commence at 10 A.M.

A TEAM belonging to Geo. Fox became frightened and ran away on Tuesday evening last. The wagon was loaded with furniture, but fortunately nobody was hurt, and none of the furniture injured.

IMPROVEMENTS. -- John C. Doerr, Esq., has just had a bran[d] new roof put on his residence, and added a new lightning rod to the building. Our young friend Henry G. Kiesler put up the lightning rod, and has also put one upon Mr. John Kiefner’s building.

CORPUS CHRISTI. -- Last Sunday was Corpus Christi, and, as usual, a large number of persons visited the Catholic Church west of town to witness the ceremonies of the occasion, though there was not as many present as formerly. Everything passed off quietly.

LARGE BARN. -- Our Sheriff, Robt. N. Dean, has just erected a large barn on his property near town. -- It is thirty-eight feet in length and the same in width and is twenty feet high. He has also had it treated with a coat of paint. He certainly has a splendid and commodious barn.

SIDEWALKS. -- We notice that Thos. Hooss, Esq., is having a nice brick pavement put down in front of the property occupied by him. Messrs. Kiesler and Kiefner are also making preparations to have brick pavements put down in front of their property. Sensible gentlemen. -- Wish everybody in town would follow suit.
