LOCAL MATTERS

THE CROPS. -- We have just returned from a visit to the lower part of the county, and saw on almost every farm, indications of renewed energy among the farmers. We saw on almost every farm new lands being cleared out, and new fences being erected, which indicate to us, new life, among the noblest class of mankind, for they are the base of all prosperity and wealth.

The wheat crop is much more encouraging than has been for two years. We noticed some fields that were blazing with verdantness; we thought the goddess Ceres had been certainly watching around them with her fostering care. We noticed considerable improvement in Wittenberg since we were last there. Mr. Nennert has erected a very large and commodious hotel, with a fine saloon attached, and if any of our friends are going that way, and wish to be well accommodated, get plenty to eat, and plenty of cigars to smoke and plenty of good beer to drink, we would advise them to stop with the gentlemanly landlord, Mr. Nennert.

We noticed also that Estel & Wineholt are erecting quite an addition to their flouring mill. I suspected they anticipate a little more wheat than usual. May their wishes be realized.

SHADE TREES. -- We see Major Weber and J. C. Killian have been planting quite a number of shade trees around the court house. We imagine the goddess of Justice will often take delight in spending many a balmy evening beneath those cooling shades.
