Weekly Perryville Union
Perryville, Missouri, Friday, 01 October 1869

LOCAL DEPARTMENT

FOR COUNTY SURVEYOR. -- We are authorized to announce the name of JOHN H. SIMPSON, as a candidate for County Surveyor. The election will be held on Saturday, the 30th day of October, 1869.

A LARGE SWEET POTATO. -- Judge Entler showed us, on Wednesday last, a mammoth sweet potato. which was raised in the garden of Augustus Doerr. This potato weighed five and a half pounds, and measured fifteen and a half inches in length, and fourteen and three-quarter inches in circumference. Can our Mississippi county neighbor beat it? Hardly.

HUGE PEACHES. -- We received a lot of peaches from Mr. Timothy Brewer, which averaged twelve ounces each. Many thanks friend Tim. Our better half enjoyed them hugely as well as some of our friends with whom, in a fit of generosity, we divided. Perry has won the belt on the potatoes, and now throws the gauntlet on the peach question. Who can beat Tim’s peaches. Guess the sponge will have to be thrown up in favor of old Perry.

THE FAIR. -- We are informed that samples of Perry county wheat will be on exhibition, the present month, at the St. Louis Agricultural and Mechanical Fair. We have pretty good reason for believing that our county will be well represented at the fair, and that she will very probably carry off a premium on good wheat. No better article of wheat can be raised any where, at least we are lead to believe so, from what we have been told.

THE CRANE CASE. -- The case of the State vs. John Crane, for killing of his brother, Curtis Crane, came up on Wednesday of last week, occupying the greater part of the day in the closing examination of witnesses. The arguments, which were lengthy, continued during the balance of the day. Cissell, Davis and Nicholson for defendant. Robinson circuit attorney for the State. The case was ably and thoroughly argued by the counsel on both sides., closing with that of Mr. Robinson for the State, which occupied three hours. The defendant was bound over for his appearance at the next term of the Circuit Court. Bond $500.
