Honor Roll of Teachers. There were a lot of teachers in our family! Look for your favorite family teachers here - I'm sure there are more.
What was it like to be a teacher or a student in a little red schoolhouse? Check out these pages from the 1914 Beers' History of Armstrong County (PA):
-
Armstrong County Schools to 1834. Log schools dot the frontier. Students attend if they can pay and there is no farm work to be done. The quality of teaching varies greatly.
-
The First Graded and Free Schools; Academies. Grammar schools are organized into grades and are supported by taxes. Higher education is done in private academies.
-
Superintendents, Institutes, Conventions and Medical Inspectors. Schools are put under the jurisdiction of the county government, but not without protest. Institutes provide continuing education for teachers. Doctors look after students' health.
-
Schools in 1914; Statistics for 1876 and 1913. How do you run a county school district on less than $100,000 a year? It's not difficult if you spend 76 cents per pupil each month. Don't read this section if you've just paid your school tax!
