Generation 2. "Colonel" William G.L. Totten (1841-1934).
Son of Lydia Black and Sidney Totten; nephew of Hamlet Totten.
William joined the Union Army in 1862 and became a first sergeant in Company B, 169th Pennsylvania Infantry. After his term of service, he read law in the offices of Henry Marchand in Greensburg, PA.
In 1865 he returned to West Virginia, where his parents had settled, and became an attorney in Buckhannon. He was elected mayor in 1868. He never married.
Because of his military bearing and the esteem in which he was held, people referred to him as "Colonel" Totten.
This is a photocopy sent to me by a researcher in West Virginia. The original picture's source is unknown.
