Sallie was a daughter of Mary Craig and Hamlet Totten. She was married to Joseph Lemon Ewing. Her children were John Hamlet and Anna Mary Craig 'Minnie' Ewing.

Sallie taught school, and her obituary states that she was a woman of "unusual mental attainments."
