Generation 1. Hamlet Totten (1802-1891).
Husband of (1) Mary Craig and (2) Jane (Brown) Craig. Father of John Craig, Lydia Jane, Elizabeth Christy, Sarah Ann Barrett and Mary Craig Totten.
Hamlet, a son of Lydia Jack and John Totten, was born in Orange Co., NY and moved to Westmoreland Co., PA in 1817. He became a school teacher, and married Mary Craig in 1824. In 1827, Hamlet and Mary moved to Armstrong Co. PA. Hamlet taught school, operated a shoe shop in Elderton and ran a "Temperance Hotel" in Kittanning. They settled on a farm in Cowanshannock Twp., near Rural Valley, in the 1830's.
Hamlet was a stalwart of the Rural Valley Presbyterian Church and was its ruling elder for many years.
After Mary died in 1866, Hamlet bought his son-in-law's house in Rural Valley and moved there. In 1868, he married Jane Brown Craig. He died in 1891.
