Dr. Robert Dougherty Ambrose (1863-1933) and Lucinda (McFarland) Ambrose (1870-1973), with their children Edgar (?-1970) and Jeannette (?-aft 1973). The picture is undated and there is no photographer's mark..

Robert Dougherty Ambrose was a son of Frank and Rebecca (Dougherty) Ambrose. He was born in 1863 in Armstrong County, probably on the family farm in East Franklin Township, and was probably named for his grandfather, Robert Dougherty. He became a dentist, practicing in Sharpsburg and Aspinwall. Robert was also a trustee and elder of the Sharpsburg Presbyterian Church.

Robert married Lucinda McFarland in 1895. They had four children - Edgar, Jeanette, Robert Jr. and James. Edgar and Robert Jr. also became dentists. Robert died in 1933 and Lucinda passed away in 1973 at the age of 103. I don't know Robert's burial place, but he is probably beside Lucinda in Mt. Royal Cemetery.

This family has a close relationship to the family of Rit and Margaret Ambrose. Robert's father Frank was Rit's brother, while his mother Rebecca was Margaret's sister. Lucinda was a first cousin of G.L. Stewart, who married Rit and Margaret's daughter Laura.
