To the Churchwardens and others, the Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Barrington in the County aforesaid to convey: And to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Dowlish Wake in the county aforesaid to receive and obey. These.

WHEREAS Complaint has been made by you the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Barrington aforesaid, unto us, whose Hands and Seals are hereunto set, two of her Majesty's Justices of the Peace, in and for the County of Somerset aforesaid, (whereof one is of the Quorum,) that David MALE Elizabeth his wife and Elizabeth about sixteen years old, Fanny about fourteen, Robert about thirteen, Sarah about eleven, James about six and Ephraim about one year their children have lately intruded themselves into your said parish of Barrington there to inhabit as Parishioners contrary to the Laws relating to the Settlement of the Poor; and are become chargeable to your said Parish of Barrington

We therefore upon due examination and Enquiry made into the Premises aforesaid, and on oath of the said David MALE this day taken before us in writing or otherwise, do find and adjudge the same to be true: And we do also adjudge that the last place of the legal settlement of them the said David MALE Elizabeth his wife and Elizabeth, Fanny, Robert, Sarah, James and Ephraim their children was and is the parish of Dowlish Wake aforesaid.

These are therefore in her Majesty's name, to order and require you the Churchwardens and Overseers of the poor of the Parish of Barrington aforesaid, that you, some, or one of you, do forthwith remove and convey them the said David MALE Elizabeth his wife and Elizabeth, Fanny, Robert, Sarah, James and Ephraim their children from your said parish of Barrington to the Parish of Dowlish Wake aforesaid, and them deliver to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor or some or one of them there, together with this our order, or a true copy thereof.

AND you the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Dowlish Wake aforesaid, are likewise hereby required in his Majesty's name, to receive and provide for them the said David MALE Elizabeth his wife and Elizabeth, Fanny, Robert, Sarah, James and Ephraim their children as Inhabitants of your said Parish of Dowlish Wake until from thence they shall be discharged by due course of law.  Given under our Hands and Seals, the twenty fourth day of February in the 59th Year of the Reign of our Sovereign lord GEORGE the Third, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith and in the Year of our Lord one thousand, eight hundred and nineteen.

The examination of David MALE now residing in the parish of Barrington in the said county.  Taken the 24th of Feb 1819

 

Who upon his oath saith that he is now about 41 years old and was born as he has heard and believes in the parish of Barrington aforesaid and saith that when he was about 13 years old he went to Dowlish Wake in the said county and there agreed to serve??? John HANNING Esq? as a servant in house?? <or horses> and to have all necefsaries? but no wages in money - that no particular time was agreed to? but he served Mr. HANNING in Dowlish Wake aforesaid about 3 years – there? he? then returned to Barrington and has lived there and in other places??? working as a Day labourer and? as a Weaver by the piece and hath done no act to his knowledge or belief? whereby a settlement can be gained and saith that his wife’s name is Mary by whom he has 6 children viz. Elizabeth about 16 years and Fanny 14 Robert 13 Sarah 11 James 6 Ephraim one year and saith that he? is now chargeable to the said parish of Barrington
