The following Compiled by Margaret Cline Harmon
Margaret is a direct descendant of Loftin Price, which we believe is the brother of David Price.

Generation No. 1

1. PRICE11 was born in Virginia. He married UNREADABLE1.

Children of PRICE and UNREADABLE are:
2. i. DAVID2 PRICE, b. December 25, 1821, Tennessee; d. April 16, 1900, Saline County, Illinois.
3. ii. LOFTIN PRICE, b. Abt. 1827, Tennessee; d. July 08, 1893, Saline County, Illinois.
iii.MA--- PRICE2, b. May 20, 1828; d. July 21, 1857, Saline County,Illinois. More About MA--- PRICE:

Saline County, Illinois4; m. (2) MARY A., January 09, 1873, Saline
County, Illinois5.

Generation No. 2

2. DAVID2 PRICE (PRICE1)6 was born December 25, 1821 in Tennessee7, and died April 16, 1900 in Saline County, Illinois. He married (1) ELIZA8 Abt. 1851 in Saline County, Illinois. He married (2) MARY JANE RAWLINGS February 17, 1874 in Saline County, Illinois9.

Notes for DAVID PRICE: This family was listed in the 1860 Illinois Census, Saline County on page 884. The census was taken on 19 July, 1860.

In the Saline Co. Illinois Chancery Records, Vol. I, 1847 - 1886, Misc.Box, File #16, William Bush vs. Nancy Jackson Bush filed 9 March 1854,Wm. Bush sued for divorce on the grounds of adultery. He claimed that she was guilty of the crime of adultery since their marriage in 1852.
Summoned as witnesses were David Price, James Price, Lofton Price, Nancy (Bush) Price, Furny Bush, Rebecca Bush and Levi Stunson.

David Price later married a widow Mary on 3 May 1873. On 24 Oct. 1874, she filed for divorce. She claimed that David Price was guilty of adultery with Elizabeth Dillon and Phoebe Nolen in the county of Saline.
My note: Mary Rawlins, 2nd wife of death David Price was divorced from Reuben Thomas. She brought to the marriage one daughter. See the Rawlins Family

An interesting twist in this is that David's son, William, married Letha E. Grindstaff on Nov. 2, 1876, in Harrisburg, Illinois. On the county clerk's index to Deaths, Book 7, Page 275, Letha E. Grindstaff Price (Dec 17, 1926) listed her father and mother as Preston Grandstaff & Nancy Rollins. Could the spelling have been Rawlins?
My note: Nancy Rawlins was the sister of Mary Jane Rawlins.

In the Saline Co. Illinois Chancery Records, Vol. I, 1847 - 1886, Box#_,June 1858, File #88 - Samuel Rawlins vs. Charlote (Miller) Rawlins, Samuel Rawlins filed for a divorce on 15 Sep. 1865 for adultery. He claimed that she committed adultery with David Price; James Price is a witness confirming her relationship with David Price. She denied all charges.
My Note: Mary Jane Rawlins had an Uncle and a brother named Samuel Rawlins. I do not have the record of a marriage to Charlotte Miller

On January 22, 1998, the Secretary of State of Illinois' office sent paperwork confirming that David Price was a Farrier and Sergeant in the 6th Cavalry Company F from Harrisburg, IL. It also showed that he was born 25 Dec 1821 and died16 April 1900. He is buried in Big Ridge Cemetery in Cottage Township near Cottage Grove, Illinois.

Notes for ELIZA: This family was listed in the 1860 Illinois Census, Saline County on page 884. The census was taken on 19 July, 1860.

Children of DAVID PRICE and ELIZA are:
i.SARAH(3) PRICE(10), b. 1852, Illinois11; m. STEPHEN BUSH, December 08, 1867, Elizabethtown, IL12.
This family was listed in the 1860 Illinois Census, Saline County on page 884. The census was taken on 19 July, 1860. I

Stephen Bush filed for a divorce on 24 Sep 1868. He claimed that on the 6th of May 1868, she deserted him and committed adultery with James Waddle. He wanted divorce from her. Witnesses summonsed: Felix Rude and James Waddle. Box # Oct. 1868, File #93.

ii.JAMES PRICE13, b. 1856, Illinois14.

Notes for JAMES PRICE: This family was listed in the 1860 Illinois Census, Saline County on page 884. The census was taken on 19 July, 1860.

There was a James C. Price who married a Mary Dawns on Aug 25, 1892 in New Madrid, MO. Could this be the same person as James Price? J. D.Price, his first cousin, moved to New Madrid County in 1895 or so. Could he have followed James Price?

4. iii.WILLIAM PRICE, b. 1857, Illinois.
iv.MISSOURI MARGARET PRICE15, b. April 1858, Illinois16; m. WILSON FEAZEL, July 18, 1874, Saline County, Illinois17.

Notes for MISSOURI MARGARET PRICE: Her father was shown as David Price on the consent to marriage of minor.

This family was listed in the 1860 Illinois Census, Saline County on page 884. The census was taken on 19 July, 1860.

More About MISSOURI MARGARET PRICE: Fact 1: July 18, 1874, Book C, Page 430, Saline County Records of Marriages. She was 16 years old.

Notes for WILSON FEAZEL: Per Saline County Illinois Chancery Book covering 1847 - 1886, Vol. I - In Box #3, File #72, there is a case of  MARY  PRICE vs. DAVID PRICE, where she filed for divorce based on grounds of adultery. Case was filed October 24, 1874. She claims that David Price was guilty of adultery with Elizabeth Dillon and Phebe Nolen in the county of Saline. She wanted her marriage dissolved. Subpoenaed were: Philip Feazel, Wilson Feazel and James Waddle.

More About WILSON FEAZEL: Fact 2: July 18, 1874, Book, D, Page 382, Saline County Marriage Records. He was 18 years old.

v. NANCY J. PRICE18, b. 1863.
vi. PRECILLA PRICE18, b. 1865.

Child of DAVID PRICE and MARY RAWLINGS is:
5. vii. DAVID ZION3 PRICE, b. 1875, Illinois; d. 1959.
3. LOFTIN2 PRICE (PRICE1)19 was born Abt. 1827 in Tennessee20, and died July 08, 1893 in Saline County, Illinois21. He married (1) ELIZABETH22 Abt. 1850. He married (2) NANCY L. BUSH23 April 28, 1851 in Harrisburg, Illinois24,25. He married (3) MALISSA ANGELINE BISHOP26 August 05, 1872 in Harrisburg, Illinois27, daughter of ROBERT BISHOP and ONIE JOHNSON.

In the 1850 US Census, Saline County, Illinois, Page 056, an Elizabeth Price (b. 1831) and Marrah Price (B. 1850) was shown living in Loftin Price's household.
Book 1, Page 5, of marriage recorded in Saline County, Illinois records that on April 28, 1851, Loftin Price married Nancy Bush.
In the 1860 Illinois Census, page 1033, Loftin Price is listed as living in Stonefort P. O. located within Saline County, Illinois.

On January 22, 1998, the Secretary of State of Illinois' office sent paperwork confirming that Loftin Price was a Farrier (a specialized blacksmith who had great knowledge of horses) and a Sergeant in the 6th Cavalry Company F, and he is buried in the Big Ridge Cemetery in Cottage Township near Cottage Grove, Illinois in Saline County.

In the 1870 Illinois Census for Saline County the following was listed on Page 4, Schedule 1 taken in S.R. 6 East, P. O. Harrisburg, 26 & 27:

PRICE, Loftin 45 Farmer Born in KY, Father - VA, Mom - TN
Nancy 35 Wife Born in IL, Father - IL, Mom -IL
Mary E. 14 daughter IL
Eliza 10 daughter MO
David 6 son IL
Elley 2 daughter IL
___________________________________________________________

On Aug. 5, 1872, he married Malissa A. Bishop of Harrisburg. In the 1880 Saline County, Illinois Census the following was listed under Page 2 of the Raleigh Village Schedule 1 taken 8 June 1880:
PRICE, Loftin 56 Farmer Born in TN, Father - VA, Mom - TN
Mary A. 50 Wife Born in ILL Father - ILL Mom - TN
David 16 son TN.
Ella 12 daughter ILL.
Eva 7 daughter ILL.
William 6 son ILL.
Flounie 5 daughter ILL.
Minnie 1 daughter ILL.

One would assume that Mary E. & Eliza Price married between 1870 and 1880 as they would have been the age for marriage. Buried next to Loftin in the Brown Cemetery or Old Ebenezer Cemetery in Harrisburg is a Ma---- Price, born 20 May 1828 and died 21 July 1857.

The 1890 U. S. Census was destroyed by fire so we do not know when Loftin Price died.

In the Early Saline County Early Court Records, Box 37, a foreclosure was filed about 1893 by John Pruett vs. Lofton Price of Saline County. Mr. Pruett showed that on the 30 day of July 1890, Lofton Price and Malissa Price, his wife, made and delivered a promissory note for $75 for: Lot No. 1 in Block No. 10 in Sloan's division of the Rail Road Addition to the town (now city) of Harrisburg.....said Price may be decreed to pay to Mr. Pruett whatever sum shall appear to be due him...that in default of such payment the mortgaged premises may be sold...

As of June 1995, I have been unable to locate Loftin PRICE or David (J. D.) Price in either the 1900 or 1910 of the Illinois or Missouri Census. We know that J. David Price was living in Missouri in 1914 and/or sometime before 1914.

Loftin's third wife, Malissa A. Bishop also married a Lewis Abey on April 29, 1898. This would most likely mean he was dead prior to1898.

UPDATE: Located Loftin Price in Illinois State Archives database of Civil War Veterans. He enlisted in Company F, Unit 6 of the Cavalry Volunteers, under the Union Forces. Received documentation from National Archives on April 24, 1999.
Certificarte #491-190 reveals that he enlisted on the 9th day of January 1862, at Shawneetown, Ill. in Co. F, 5th Regiment of Illinois Cav.Volunteers, to serve 3 years, or during the war.

Further, he was disabled by Typhoid fever at Memphis, Tenn. Aug. 1,863. Dropsy resulted of black jandice at Inka, Miss. on Oct. 20,1865. He was discharged Nov. 5, 1865.

Generation No. 3

4. WILLIAM3 PRICE (DAVID2, PRICE1)35 was born 1857 in Illinois36. He married LETHA ELIZABETH GRINDSTAFF November 02, 1876 in Saline County, Illinois37, daughter of PRESTON GRINDSTAFF and NANCY RAWLINGS.

Notes for WILLIAM PRICE: This family was listed in the 1860 IllinoisCensus, Saline County on page 884. The census was taken on 19 July,1860.

Additionally, Loftin's son, J. D. Price married A. C. Grandstaff in Harrisburg, IL. I am sure there is some connection with this family.

In Book D, Page 523, Saline County Records of Marriages, states that a Hugh Robinson was guardian of Letha E. Rawlings, who consented to marriage of minor, and that her mother and father were dead. Yet, she is listed in the marriage affidavit as Letha E. Grindstaff, 17 years old. She married William Price on Nov. 2, 1876 in Saline County, Illinois. He was 20 years old.
My notes: Letha Grindstaff is the daughter of Preston Grindstaff and Nancy Rawlin who have both died. Hugh Robinson is her Uncle, husband of Catherine Rawlins. He became guardian after the death of William Rawlins, her grandfather. William Price is son of David Price and Marry Jane Rawlins. They are cousins.

A Darse D. Price, who died Jan. 15, 1936 in Saline County, Illinois, showed a Dock & Letha Price as his parents.
My note: Darius Price became guardian of Letha Grindstaff Price and her brother Samuel Grindstaff after the death of Hugh Robinson. Darius Rawlins is also their Uncle. Letha and William Price apparently named their first son after him. (Was William Price's nick name Dock?)

Notes for LETHA ELIZABETH GRINDSTAFF: Book D, Page 523, Saline County Records of Marriage, states that Hugh Robinson was her guardian consented to marriage of minor (17 years old Letha E. Rawlings), and that her mother and father were dead. He cites Letha E. Rawlings, yet she is listed above in the marriage affidavit as Letha E. Grindstaff, who married William Price on Nov. 2, 1876, in Harrisburg, Illinois.

On the county clerk's index to Deaths, Book 7, Page 275, Letha E.Grindstaff Price (Dec 17, 1926) listed her father and mother as Preston Grandstaff & Nancy Rollins (or Rawlings).

In the 1860 Illinois Federal Census of Hardin County, on page 884, a Preston GRANDSTAFF, age 26, is listed with wife Nancy ?, age 23, and a 9 month old child Elizabeth. The census was taken 24 July, 1860. It is highly likely that this is Letha E. Grindstaff. She is the same age and list Preston as her father. Her mother was most likely Nancy Rollins or Nancy RAWLINGS.

I have included this family because a second Price male and Grandstaff female married six years later, Sept 13, 1883, in the same town. My gut instinct tells me that they were probably related in some way.
My Notes: In 1876 Letha Elizabeth Grindstaff married William Price, her first cousin.

More About LETHA ELIZABETH GRINDSTAFF: Fact 1: November 02, 1876, Book D, Page 523, Saline County Records of Marriages. She was 17 years old.
Fact 2: December 17, 1926, Book, 7, Page 275, Saline County Death Records.
Children of WILLIAM PRICE and LETHA GRINDSTAFF are:
i. DARSE D.4 PRICE, b. Illinois; d. January 15, 1936, Saline County,
Illinois38.
10. ii. MARY ISABELA FLETCHER, b. 1873, Saline County, Illinois; d.
November 27, 1926, Saline County, Illinois.
My notes: This is not correct. Mary Isabela Fletcher is the daughter of James Fletcher and Martha Riddle. This is the grandmother of Diana Faye Stratman. There is some question as to whether or not David Z. Price was her first husband which may have something to do with this descrepancy. More research is required. See my page on David Price.
 5. DAVID ZION3 PRICE (DAVID2, PRICE1)39 was born 1875 in Illinois40, and died 195941. He married MARY ISABELA FLETCHER41 May 08, 1894 in Saline County, Illinois42, daughter of WILLIAM PRICE and LETHA GRINDSTAFF.
My notes: See above.
More About DAVID ZION PRICE:
Fact 1: May 08, 1894, Book C, Page 334, Saline County Records of Marriages. He was 19 years old.
Child of DAVID PRICE and MARY FLETCHER is:
i. JOHN4 PRICE43, b. 1894; d. 1955; m. EFFIE J.43.
My notes: Other children of David Z. Price and Mary Fletcher listed on my David Price page, including the mother of Diana Faye Stratman. Ethel Marie Price.
6. MIRRAH3 PRICE (LOFTIN2, PRICE1)44 was born September 1850 in Saline County, Illinois45, and died 1887 in Saline County, Illinois46. She married JOHN E. BISHOP46 June 03, 1868 in Saline County, Illinois47, son of BEAL JR. and ANNIS DAVIS.

Notes for MIRRAH PRICE: Ancestor Chart #3 ;by Bernece Bishop Ro(d)gers of Davisburg, MI 48019, obtained on a visit to Harrisburg, VA in August 1996, showed the mother of Mirrah Price as Nancy L. Bush.

My records show that she was RAISED by Nancy L. Bush, who married her father Loftin Price married Nancy Bush on April 28, 1851. However, in the 1850 Illinois Census, an Elizabeth Price (b. 1831) and Marrah Price
(B. 1850) was shown living in Loftin Price's household. Found on Page 056 of Saline County, Illinois.

In the 1860 Illinois Census, page 1033, Loftin Price is listed as living in Stonefort P. O. located within Saline County, Illinois and Mirrah Price is a part of this family.
Children of MIRRAH PRICE and JOHN BISHOP are:
i. JOHN E.4 BISHOP48, b. November 24, 1870, Saline County, Illinois49;
d. January 28, 1910, Saline County, Illinois50.
11. ii. VIRGIL BISHOP, b. January 23, 1879, Saline County, Illinois; d.
June 15, 1961, Saline County, Illinois.
7. JAMES DAVID3 PRICE (LOFTIN2, PRICE1)51 was born November 10, 1864 in Harrisburg, Saline County, Illinois52, and died June 22, 1931 in Cotton Hill, Missouri53. He married (1) ANCIFER C. GRINDSTAFF December 20, 1883 in Saline County, Illinois54, daughter of HENRY GRINDSTAFF and REBECCA JOHNSON. He married (2) SYLVIA PORTER December 14, 1916 in Sikeston, Missouri55.

Notes for JAMES DAVID PRICE: For years I understood from family history that J. D. PRICE (James David) was born in Hardin County, Illinois but the 1880 Illinois Census for Hardin County (Page 2 for inhabitants inRaleigh Village taken 8 June) shows that he was born in Tennessee, as was his father Loftin and his mother "Mary" was born in Illinois. I have Missouri Death Certificate #21062 with name, dates, etc. and also inspected the headstone in cemetery near East Prairie, Missouri.

In June, 1916 J. D. Price lost most of his family to fatal injuries. His wife, Gumy Grandstaff-Price, a daughter-in-law, Flossie Cormody Price, and some of the Price's hired hands were killed in a cyclone that hit the Malden/Southeast Missouri area in June 5, 1916. His son Henry died several days later, after the birth of his youngest daughter. The storm destroyed his home where he and his extended family were staying. J. D. Price is buried in the Dog Wood Cemetery, along with his wife, sons Henry, Harry and Hillis. The cemetery is near East Prairie, Missouri. The people who worked for the Prices that were killed in the tornado are also buried several rows over from the Price Family. According to the New Madrid Record, the farm hands killed were: Jessie Nelson, Aged 20; Henry Whikker, Aged 35; Mrs. Letrill, aged 35, and her daughter, aged 3 years.

_____________________________________________________________

We know that J. D. Price, of Scotch-Irish ancestry, was well educated because he wrote several letters to his granddaughter Beulah Price and tried to help his son Henry's widow, Carrie Rettig Price, by giving her information of a coal mine that his granddaughters were heirs to in the Harrisburg, Illinois area. His daughter-in-law never followed-up on the information and the granddaughters failed to pursue the issue once adults.

Notes for ANCIFER C. GRINDSTAFF: The spelling of her name on her marriage certificate is GRINDSTAFF, but her headstone reads Grandstaff.
Children of JAMES PRICE and ANCIFER GRINDSTAFF are:
i. HILLARY4 PRICE, b. Abt. 1885, Saline County, Illinois; m. CLARA
PARMA
, February 17, 1909, New Madrid, Missouri56.

Notes for HILLARY PRICE:
My mother, Marie Price Cline, attended J. D. Price's funeral and remembers seeing Hillary Price at the service in June of 1931. At that time he was to have been living in the area of Malden, Missouri. No other information is known on Hillary Price.
12. ii. HENRY PRICE, b. January 12, 1889, Saline County, Illinois; d.June 25, 1916, Canalou, Missouri.
iii. HARRY PRICE, b. April 06, 1890, Raleigh, Illinois57; d. May 15,1914, New Madrid Co., Missouri.
Notes for HARRY PRICE: This family had more than its share of sadness. Surely there were good times, but history failed to record those events. The string of tragedies began in May of 1914 with the death of J. D. And "Gumy" Price's third son, Harry. His death certificate revealed that he was single and he died of bronchus pneumonia in New Madrid, Missouri.

13. iv. HILLIS PRICE, b. February 25, 1894, Harrisburg, Saline, Illinois; d. November 11, 1918, Ft. Riley, Kansas.

Generation No. 4

10. MARY ISABELA4 FLETCHER (WILLIAM3 PRICE, DAVID2, PRICE1)62 was born
1873 in Saline County, Illinois, and died November 27, 1926 in Saline
County, Illinois63. She married DAVID ZION PRICE64 May 08, 1894 in
Saline County, Illinois65, son of DAVID PRICE and MARY RAWLINGS.
More About DAVID ZION PRICE:
My Notes: Mary Isabelle Fletcher was the daughter of James Fletcher and Martha Riddle. She died June 18 1937.
Fact 1: May 08, 1894, Book C, Page 334, Saline County Records of
Marriages. He was 19 years old.
Child of MARY FLETCHER and DAVID PRICE is:
i. JOHN5 PRICE66, b. 1894; d. 1955; m. EFFIE J.66.
11. VIRGIL4 BISHOP (MIRRAH3 PRICE, LOFTIN2, PRICE1)67 was born January 23, 1879 in Saline County, Illinois68, and died June 15, 1961 in Saline County, Illinois. He married ETTA M. LAWYER69 September 27, 1902 in Saline County, Illinois70.
Child of VIRGIL BISHOP and ETTA LAWYER is:
i. HAROLD E.5 BISHOP71, b. July 16, 1918.
12. HENRY4 PRICE (JAMES DAVID3, LOFTIN2, PRICE1) was born January 12,1889 in Saline County, Illinois72, and died June 25, 1916 in Canalou, Missouri73. He married ANNA CAROLINE RETTIG December 21, 1914 in New Madrid, Missouri, daughter of FRED RETTIG and ANNA KRIEG.
Notes for HENRY PRICE:

In 1913, Henry Price lived across the road from "Carrie" Rettig's sister, Katherine Rettig- Brummitt, in Matthews, Missouri. Carrie Rettig met Henry Price while visiting her sister. Henry and Carrie were
married within a year after they met.
Two years after they were married, Henry, his mother (Gummy Grandstaff-Price), and some of the Price's hired hands were killed in a cyclone that hit the Malden/Southeast Missouri area in June 1916. Henry lived only two days after the birth of his youngest daughter while on the train en route for a hospital in St. Louis. Carrie Rettig, her daughter Marie and the surviving Prices went to Sikeston, Missouri and stayed with the Grandstaff family.
My notes: It is very likely that this Grindstaff family is related to the family of Leatha Grindstaff who married William Price and even more certain do the the unusual name.

Henry's father, J.D. Price, helped her and his two small grand-daughters for a while after the storm. Carrie found that situation difficult as time went on, so she moved from relative to relative trying to care for her two daughters, Marie and Beulah. Henry's widow was given information by her father-in-law that his granddaughters were in line to inherit Henry's portion of a coal mine located around Harrisburg, or Saline County, Illinois. Henry's mother's family (Grandstaff) owned the property and mineral rights to the coal mine. The specific information was lost in one of Carrie's moves and nothing became of the "reported" inheritance.

Henry Price is buried in the Dog Wood Cemetery near EastPrairie, Missouri, with both his parents and two of his brothers. The people who worked for the Prices that were killed in the cyclone are also buried several rows over from the Price family.
