He was an only child.Vandelia went by name of Fannie Miller and relocated to Springfield, Illinois before 1917 where she met and married William Groves, a man 19 years her seniorwhom she divorced within a few years. She left her young son with William Groves.
Vandelia was married three times.
Her second husband was abusive and she divorced him on those grounds.
When she married her third husband, Sam Shiebly, she returned to raise her son and remained with him until her death. She died on her way to church at 52 years of age on July 8, 1951.
