The COCKERHAM Timeline

The name COCKERHAM is of English origin, designating one who came from Cockerham (homestead on the Cocker River) in Lancashire, England. The name is variously spelt COCKERHAM, COCKRUM, COCKRAM, COCKRAN and COCHRAN. Some researchers suggest the American founder of the Surry Co, VA family was one William COCKERHAM of Dorset, England. He registered his pedigree with the Hearlds in their Visitation to Dorset in 1623 when he was thirty years of age. (John Bennet Boddie, Historical Southern Families Vol III)

According to Jerry L. COCHRAN (1996 oaktree5@marshill.com) Jacob COCKERHAM and his brother, Abraham COCKERHAM, lived in Anson County, North Carolina during 1790 and 1800. Jacob and his clan worked around Anson County as Surveyors and either Abraham COCKERHAM or Jacob COCKERHAM's son Abraham worked with Jacob in surveying and laying out Anson County.

Jacob's son, Jacob COCKERHAN II, changed the name to COCHRAN and they all left the Anson County area and moved to the area northwest of Dawsonville, GA. This was perhaps 250 miles WSW of Anson County. There are two beautiful cemeteries there full of COCHRANs. The COCHRAN Cemetery (private) and the High Shoals Church Cemetery are near Amicacola Falls State Park. This area is very mountainous and is the heart of the Smoky Mountains. This entire area was once the COCHRAN estate.

In "Surry County, NC Court Minutes, 1810-14," Volume V, comp. by Iris M. Harvey and Agnes M. Wells:

1811 -- Daniel COCKERHAM on a jury list.

Daniel COCKERHAM as a juror.

Wed., 14 Aug. 1811. On a jury impaneled and sworn was:

DANIEL COCKERHAM and Josiah VANDERPOOL.

In 1813 on a list to serve as jurors is the name of WILLIAM COCKERHAM.

The Cockerham-Isaacs connection may have come later -- in Indiana, or if in NC, out of Surry County rather than Ashe County. There are a number of Cockerhams in Surry County listed in "Surry County, NC Wills, 1771-1827." by Jo White Linn. As early as 1774 where a Moses Cockerham is mentioned. In 1801 in the will of John Burch is mention his daughter, Maryana [sic] COCKERHAM (to have tract where she lies on Whitaker's Branch); granddaugther, Charity COCKERHAM, to have Negro Joe.

The will of Moses X COCKERHAM dated 25 Feb. 1816 mentions wife, Elizabeth; son Moses to have the grist mill under William Anderson COCKERHAM is of age.

The latter is the son of "my decd son, James." Daughter: Susanna AUBERRY. Exrs: son Moses and Catlett SMITH. Wit: Mitchell THOMPSON, Elizabeth X

COCKERHAM. Recorded Feb. Ct. 1817. [notes that 1815 Surry Co. tax list shows Moses COCKERHAM with 500 acres on Fishers River and 1817 Surry County census shows him with 500 acres on Fishers River adj. Davis HOLDER].

In 1794 of Wilkes County. is a Humphry COCKRAM with 300 acres and 1 poll.

DAVID COCKERHAM

1. David COCKERHAM b 1790-1798 NC; d 5 NOV 1874 Jefferson Co, KS
(Virginia E. STUART gives 1777 as birthdate with IN as birthplace, and a death

date of Nov 1875, but this is in conflict with the probate information of 24 Nov 1874.)
-sp(1) Elizabeth PALMER md 3 Oct 1810 Wilkes Co, NC
(Wilkes Co NC Marriage index, Bondsman John LONDON)
-sp(2) Elizabeth McVAY md 25 Oct 1825 Wayne Co, IN

b 1805 NC; d before 1860
-sp(3?) Mary ___________ b 1834 IN; md before 1860

Mary may have died before 1870 since she does not appear in the census of that year with David in his daughter's household.

The following is a timeline for possible census records - none of these have been found:
In 1800, David COCKERHAM would have been about 2-10 years old, (under 5 or 5-10) possibly living in NC. He would probably be closer to ten years of age if his marriage to Eliz PALMER in 1810 is any indication.
In 1810, David COCKERHAM would have been about 12-20 years old (10-15 or 15 and older). He may have been living in Wilkes Co, NC at the time.

In 1820, David COCKERHAM would have been about 22-30 years old. There should be at least two female children, under 10, (Mary and Nancy) and one male, under 10, (Daniel) living with him as well as a wife. They may possibly be in KY.

In 1820 KY, there is a Daniel COCKREBAM (possible this could be David?) in Simpson Co p21 l25.
2 males under 10 3 females under 10
1 male between 10-15 2 females between 10-15
1 male 26-44 2 females 16-25
1 female 26-44

In 1830, David COCKERHAM would have been about 32-40 years old. At least two female children (Mary, Nancy, and perhaps Leah) and one male child (Daniel) from his first marriage plus his second wife, Elizabeth McVAY, two sons (William and John) and one daughter (Cynthia) from his marriage to Elizabeth. Since William was born in 1826 in IN and John was born in 1827 in IN the family should appear in the 1830 IN census, however only a William and Stephen COCKERHAM show in that census living in Jackson County IN.

1830 IN COCKERHAM, William Jack 243 Hamilton
IN COCKERHAM, Stephen Jack 243 Hamilton

In 1840, David COCKERHAM would have been about 35-50 years old. His second wife, Elizabeth McVAY, would have been about 35 (b1805 NC) and their children should be living with them. At least the following children should show:

William COCKERHAM 14 b1826 IN
John COCKERHAM 13 b1827 IN
Cynthia COCKERHAM 12 b1828 IN
George COCKERHAM 09 b1831 IN
Melinda COCKERHAM 07 b1833 IN
Joseph COCKERHAM 04 b1836 IN
Matilda COCKERHAM 03 b 23 Oct 1837 IN
This would mean in 1840 there should be
1 male under 5 (Joseph) 1 female under 5 (Matilda)
1 male 5-10 (George) 2 females 10-15 (Cynthia and Melinda)
2 males 10-15 (William & John) 1 female (Elizabeth) 30-40
1 male 30-50 (David)

The family should be in IN but could be anywhere. There is a D. S. COCKERHAM in the Macon Co, NC census:

1840 NC Macon Co p156

COCKERHAM, D. S.

1 male under 5 2 females under 5

2 males 5-10 1 female 10-15

1 male 30-40 1 female 30-40

This family could fit the profile with the exception of the 2 males 10-15, which are missing, and the addition of an extra male and female 5-10 and a female under 5.

1840 IN - this is the only David COCKRAN:
Wayne Co p233

COCKRAN, David

1 male under 5 1 female 20-30

1 male 10-15

1 male 20-30

He may be a relation but the ages do not fit for our David COCKERHAM. He could be his son.

IN 1840 IN Jackson Co 025

COCKREHAM, Dan

1 male under 5 1 female under 5

2 males 5-10 1 female 5-10

1 male 30-40 1 female 10-15

1 female 30-40

Also in 1840 IN Jackson Co 053

COCKERHAM, William

2 males under 5 1 female under 5

1 male 5-10 2 females 5-40

1 male 15-20 1 female 15-20

1 male 30-40 1 female 20-30

According to researcher Virginia E. STUART, 1706 W. Summit Lot 3,

Winterset IA 50273 9473-9467 (515) 462-2358 [1994], David COCKERHAM was a Primitive Baptist Minister and is buried in the Grantville Cemetery just east of Topeka, KS.

From "Short History of the Baptists" by Henry C. Vedder. 1907, Primitive Baptists and others called themselves "Anti-mission", "Old School" and "Hard-shell". Henry Vedder was a noted Baptist historian and this "short" book is 431 pages long. This copy was in its sixteenth printing and had a date of 1967, so it has enjoyed an extended popularity. "Their Associations decline fellowship with any church that supports any "missionary, Bible, tract, or Sunday-school union society or advocates State Conventions or theological schools." "Washing of the saint's feet they hold to be an ordinance of the gospel .... They have churches in twenty eight states, and are strong in the country districts of Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Tennessee .... In 1890 they had 3,222 churches and 127,347 members."

Researcher James E. COCKERHAM, 425 West Main Street, Jonesville, NC [1994] sugguests the family is in some way is related to William COCKERHAM, son of Moses COCKERHAM, Sr. of Surry County, NC. Moses was an uncle of Mr.COCKERHAM's direct ancestor, David COCKERHAM [1763-1856]. However, Mr. Bill O'Daniel, 404 West Shepperd, Littleton, CO 80120 [1994] says Moses COCKERHAM, Sr. did not name a son (William) in his will. His will names only two sons, James (who had a son named William Anderson COCKERHAM) and Moses COCKERHAM, Jr.

As an aside, Mr. COCKERHAM indicated that the five most common names of male children in the COCKERHAM family seem to be David, Daniel, John, Thomas and William, while the name Mary (or Polly) ranks among the top two for females.

La Verta Thomas gives Joseph McVAY as Elizabeth McVEY's father. From information given by Virginia Stuart, in 1856 Joseph M. COCKERHAM died on 20 June at the age of 20 years, 6 months and 12 days. His grave is beneath a broken stone in the STUART cemetery near Rising Sun, IA, east of Des Moines and south of southeast Polk Four Mile Elementary School Building. If Joseph M. COCKERHAM died in IA, the family may have been there for a short time in 1856, however they appear in the 1860 census in Marion County, IN. Of course, Joseph may have been in IA on his own since he was in his twenties at the time.

Daniel COCKERHAM and his family appear in the 1850 Hendricks Co IN census. At that time they have Elizabeth COCKERHAM, 6 months old, living with them. Her age is too close to the next oldest daughter, Rhonda Ann COCKERHAM (1 year old) to be a child of Hannah and Daniel. I believe she is the daughter of John COCKERHAM and his first wife, Eliza BURKS. The Elizabeth COCKERHAM (9 years old) who shows in the 1860 MO census must be another child born to Daniel and Hulda a year after the 1850 census.

The family moved to MO in 1860. Daughter, Nancy Jane COCKERHAM, was married at Rock Creek, KS in 1865. Daniel COCKERHAM died before 1870. Hulda died after 1870 since she appears with her two sons, Dan and Enos in the 1870 census.

According to Virginia STUART, Coonrod's father was George STUART and his mother was Elizabeth. George STUART was born 1783 in VA and died about 1850-1852. He and his wife are buried in Rising Sun, Polk Co, IA. His wife, Elizabeth, may have had the surname of COONROD or KOONROD since this was the name they gave their third son, Coonrod Charles STUART. Elizabeth was born 14 Apr 1785 or 27 Apr 1786 VA. She is a widow (80?) in the 1860 Polk Co, IA census, living with her son, Brice Jacob STUART. She died 5 Jan 1865 in Polk Co, IA at the age of 79 yeras, 9 months and 22 days. She is buried in the STUART Cemetery, Four Mile Twp, Polk Co, IA.

It is possible the VICE family was related to the STEWARTs in some way, perhaps one of the STEWART daughters married a VICE and these are their children. Later material seems to indicate she may have been adopted by the STEWART family.

Since Brice had married a Charlotte HOSKINSON, there may be some relationship here. This. J. HOSKINS may be her father? He would have been age 26 at her birth year.

The family of Coonrod and Matilda STUART (STEWARD) appears in the 1870

Census, Kaw Twp, Jefferson Co, KS.

From notes provided by Virginia E. STUART:

Coonrod STUART hung himself in a hickory tree on their farm in South Twp, Madison Co, IA. His son, Brice Jacob STUART, found him swinging from the hickory limb when he went out to do the chores. The tree was out of the driveway to the southeast. The farm was east of the Elm Grove Church on the south side of the road. Brice's hair turned gray from the shock of the hanging. He had dark hair until that day and was gray the next day! (as told by Dulcy WICKETT, who was born in this house.)

1880 IA Polk Co Delaware Twp [Vol 26 ED170 Sh19 L44]

This census lists Coonrod STEWARD (55) VA and his family. Matilda is shown as being born in IN and her parents are shown as both being born in OH. Another relative may have given this information since in the 1900 census her parents are listed as father born NC and mother born NC, which should be correct. In 1910 Matilda's father is listed as being born in NC and her mother in SC.

1900 IA Madison Co South Twp [Vol48 ED34 Sh15 L50] Brice Jacob STUART and John

Daniel STUART did not marry since they are still living with their parents. It

also appears the name is now being spelt STUART, as opposed to the STEWARD

name recorded in 1880. Coonrod and Matilda have had ten children and eight are

still alive in 1900.

James William STUART and Charles J. STUART are living close by. James is

a widower and Charles has two children living with his family which must be

sons of James.

*Missouri COCKERHAM's date of birth is five years prior to John and Rebecca's marriage. Missouri may be a daughter from another marriage of either John or Rebecca. She does not appear in the 1880 MO census with the family. Perhaps she has married (she would be 20 in 1880) or may have died by this time.
