The Salter families that settled in Beckwith township, and Montague Township, Lanark County, Ontario were from Southern Ireland. The areas of Carlow,Kilkenny,Cork and Wexford have all been mentioned. They came in the early 1800's by ship with little more than what they had on their backs. Some were granted land, some worked for their land and managed to buy their land. This page is a tribute to the courage these settlers showed by coming to a new land, far away from home and parents to start a new and better life in Canada. Many of the offspring of these Irish Salter families had left the Beckwith/Montague area by the late 1800's, again in search of a better life in this vast new country their grandparents had come to. Some of these pioneers are buried on their farms and alot of them are buried in the Franktown Public Cemetery, Beckwith Township, Lanark County, Ontario....here we connect you to their family trees; in tribute.
