1880's photo.  Patriotic Order Sons of America, Washington Camp No. 75 (organized in 1867) build a patriotic display on Second Street.  My great-uncle Franklin P. Hepner, (1882-1968), was a member of  this organization.

Other lodges in Saint Clair included:    Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Mineral Lodge No. 285 (organized in 1848); Masonic Anthracite Lodge no. 285 (organized in 1853); Order of the Eastern Star, Kalmia Chapter No. 261 (organized in 1920); Ivorites Bee Lodge no. 1 (organized in 1863); Ancient Order of Hibernians Division no. 9 (organized in 1886); St. Michael's Benevolent Association Society No. 208 (organized in 1870); Order of Independent Americans, Saint Clair Council No. 933 (organized in 1869); and Knights of St. George, Branch No. 129 (organized in 1910).

Veterans' Clubs consisted of a Civil War Veterans' Club, the G.A.R. Organization, World War I, and Spanish-American Club.  In 1890, several Civil War veterans published a book, "Personal War Sketches", containing a series of Civil War experiences.  More military


More info on the Odd Fellows:   Mineral Lodge, No. 285 I.O.O.F. was chartered November 22, 1847 and organized April 1, 1848.  The original members were:  John Batter, Philip Lewis, Anthony Mawry, Jacob Metz, William Phillips, William Renner, John Seitzinger, Daniel Shafer, William Walker and William Williams.

The lodge met each Wednesday evening in the hall on the corner of 2nd and Hancock Streets.   On September 27, 1865, the lodge purchased from John Holmes, four acres for a cemetery.  It was chartered on July 12, 1866, under the name of Odd Fellows' Cemetery Association of the Borough of Saint Clair.  The cemetery was dedicated on October 1, 1867.  Later an add ional three acres were purchased.

Membership in 1934:  George Boote, Noble Grand; George Kapsha, vice Grand; Charles J. Crawshaw, Treasurer; Joseph Kelly, Secretary, Joseph H. Hughes, Chaplain; Joseph P. Kelly, Joseph H. Hughes, Joshire Tuckett, Trustees. 

The I.O.O.F. is no longer active in Saint Clair, but is active nationwide.  www.ioof.org

Saint Clair Athletic Club

Organized various sporting events in the town.  They included footraces, baseball and professional basketball.
