Introduction

Northumberland

Welcome to the Dawson family page of my family history website.  This page covers the family of my wife's grandmother, Linda Winifred Tasker's grandmother, Annie Dawson.  The Dawson family were rural farm hands and mine workers from Allendale, Northumberland, England where their ancestry can be traced back to the mid-17th century.

Please Note: This page is intended only as a narrative historical overview of this family.  There is additional detailed information available for almost ever person presented on this page.  To avoid the unnecessary work of double-entering such things as vital statistics, the additional information can be found in the accompanying GEDCOM database.  Please make sure you click on the INDEX button at the bottom of the page so you don't miss out on potentially valuable additional information.

The Origin Of The Surname "Dawson"

The surname Dawson has two suggested origins.  The first and more likely is a contraction of Davidson or Davison, based on the forename "Daw", a nickname form of "David".  Thus, Dawson means "son of David".  Therefore the surname is most likely a patronymic and probably has multiple origins.  Dawson is also claimed by some researchers to be a corruption of the Norman French D'Ossone, from the town of Ossone, in Normandy.  Most authorities prefer the former etymology although it is quite possible that both are true, as the name certainly has more than one geographic origin.

Frances Bell said that her mother, Annie Dawson, was born on a farm called Whitley Shield, only a few miles from Hexham Abbey.  She brought a picture of the farm with her to Canada (at right).  Family records refer to the name as "Whitley Shield".  It seems to be an ancient farm which can be found on ordnance survey maps as far back as the John Speed's map of 1610.  It can be found with various spellings: Whitely, Whitley, Whiteley, Whitelee and White Shields.  It is located in the parish of Allendale about 7 miles southwest of the village of Allendale and just north of Carr Shield.  Allendale is located about 12 miles southwest of Hexham and about 5 miles west of Whitley Chapel.

Following a visit from John Wesley (1703-1791) himself, the Allendale area became strongly supportive of Wesley's Methodism and in 1857 Whitely Shield became the sight of a Primitive Methodist Church.  It appears that the Whiteley Shield farm was part of the estate of the Blackett-Beaumont family who owned the mineral rights to most of the Allendale valley through the 18th century.

The 1839 tithe award records indicate "Thomas Dawson and others" as occupants of Whitely Shield, then owned by George Crawhall.  This would be Thomas Dawson of Branch 2, b: 1818, son of Hugh Dawson and Elizabeth Graham.  The farm is recorded as 78 acres and the tithe-rent was 4 pounds.

Although the descendants of the Dawsons remember Hexham Abbey as the significant local landmark they also lived only about 15 miles south of another very significant historical landmark, Hadrian's Wall.

Hadrian's Wall

Hadrian's Wall is an impressive archaeological remnant, nearly 2000 years old, from the time when England (then known as Britannia) was a province of the Roman Empire. The Wall was built by order of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, around AD 122. For six years professional soldiers built a wall 80 Roman miles long (about 120kms), from Wallsend-on-Tyne in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in the west. Hadrian wanted to mark the northern boundary of his Empire and to protect the "civilized" Empire from the Celtic "barbarians" to the north.

Early Dawson Ancestors

The earliest suggested ancestor of our Dawson family is John Dawson in Allendale, shown immediately below.  The first two generations of this family are based on IGI data and should be considered as unverified.  The first generation is quite speculative, whereas the second generation is more likely reliable.  However truly reliable data does not begin until the third generation of Abraham Dawson, below.

John Dawson and Annam Keenliside in Allendale

John DAWSON was born ABT 1650 in England.  He may be the John Dawson who married in 1681 in Hexham, Northumberland, England to Annam KEENLISIDE b: ABT 1660 in England.  However, the marriage, wife, and children shown here for this John are speculative and based solely on IGI matches. They are unverified.  It is suggested that they may have been the parents of:

  1. Has No Children George DAWSON b: ABT 23 FEB 1681/82 in Allendale, Northumberland, England
  2. Has Children John DAWSON b: ABT 20 JAN 1682/83 in Allendale, Northumberland, England.  His story continues below.
  3. Has No Children Thomas DAWSON b: ABT 20 JAN 1682/83 in Allendale, Northumberland, England
  4. Has No Children William DAWSON b: ABT 1 NOV 1683 in Allendale, Northumberland, England
  5. Has No Children Ann DAWSON b: ABT 16 MAR 1683/84 in Allendale, Northumberland, England

John Dawson and Ann Baxter in Woodhead

Has Children John DAWSON was born ABT 20 JAN 1682/83 in Allendale, Northumberland, England, shown above as a son of John Dawson, possible mother, Annam Keenliside.   Firmer evidence begins with this John DAWSON who may have married on 7 FEB 1696/97 in Hexham, Northumberland, England to Ann BAXTER b: ABT 1680 in England, however this marriage is unverified.  In 1708, John is listed as a Warden of St. Cuthbert's Church, Allendale Parish, Northumberland, England. He is listed as residing at Woodhead, Allendale.  John Dawson is known to be the father of:

  1. Has Children John DAWSON b: BET FEB 1698/99 AND MAY 1699 in Allendale, Northumberland, England.  The IGI shows two possible births for John Dawson, son of John Dawson in Allendale: 24 FEB 1699/98 or 26 MAY 1699. OPR will have to be consulted.  His wife is unknown.  He is suggested as the father of:
    1. Has No Children Hannah DAWSON b: DEC 1724 in Allendale, Northumberland, England
    2. Has No Children George DAWSON b: JUL 1727 in Allendale, Northumberland, England
    3. Has No Children Thomas DAWSON b: MAY 1729 in Allendale, Northumberland, England
    4. Has No Children Abraham DAWSON b: DEC 1729 in Allendale, Northumberland, England
    5. Has No Children Margaret DAWSON b: MAY 1732 in Allendale, Northumberland, England
    6. Has Children Whitfield DAWSON b: ABT 3 JUL 1734 in Allendale, Northumberland, England.  Whitfield's first marriage comes from One World Tree Project, unknown submitter. The second marriage and family are found in nearby Alston, Cumberland. Information on this family comes from the IGI, member submitted data, and is contradictory. The name Whitfield Dawson appears to be unique and thus there appears that the two marriages are for the same man. Onomastics reinforces this suggestion. However this family should be considered unverified.  It is suggested that Whitfield Dawson married firstly on 14 NOV 1762 in Allendale and Haltwhistle, Northumberland, England to Sarah JOHNSON b: ABT 1735 in England, and that they had the following child:
      1. Has No Children Elizabeth DAWSON b: ABT 29 OCT 1763 in Allendale, Northumberland, England

It is suggested that Whitfield Dawson married secondly on 2 JUL 1768 in Saint John, Garrigill, Cumberland, England, and that they had the following children:

      1. Has No Children Sarah DAWSON b: ABT 7 MAY 1769 in Alston, Cumberland, England
      2. Has No Children John DAWSON b: ABT 15 MAR 1772 in Kirkhaugh, Northumberland, England
      3. Has No Children Elizabeth DAWSON b: ABT 1773 in Alston, Cumberland, England
      4. Has No Children William DAWSON b: ABT 17 AUG 1779 in Alston, Cumberland, England
      5. Has No Children John DAWSON b: ABT 22 JUL 1780 in Alston, Cumberland, England
      6. Has No Children Thomas DAWSON b: ABT 22 JUL 1780 in Alston, Cumberland, England
      7. Has No Children Whitfield DAWSON b: ABT 11 AUG 1781 in Alston, Cumberland, England
      8. Has No Children Johan DAWSON b: ABT 26 MAR 1785 in Alston, Cumberland, England
  2. Has No Children Ann DAWSON b: ABT 8 MAR 1699/00 in Allendale, Northumberland, England
  3. Has No Children Sarah DAWSON b: ABT 9 MAR 1703/04 in Allendale, Northumberland, England
  4. Has No Children Mary DAWSON b: ABT 1 JUL 1705 in Allendale, Northumberland, England
  5. Has Children Abraham DAWSON b: ABT 11 DEC 1707 in Far Hope, Allendale, Northumberland, England.  He married firstly to Ann Boutflower and secondly to Jane Robinson.  Their story continues below.

This second marriage and all descendants from that marriage should be considered as unconfirmed.  Hugh Dawson and Hannah Oliver had the following children:

Legend

Has Children = This person has known descendants.

ABT = "about" and is used in three ways:

  1. Where it precedes a precise date of birth, such as "ABT 3 DEC 1855", then it means that the person was baptized on 3 DEC 1795, but his/her exact date of birth is unknown.

  2. Where it precedes a semi-precise date of birth with the month only given, such as "ABT DEC 1855", then that means that the birth is recorded in the civil birth registrations for the quarter ending with that month.  Thus the person's birth was registered sometime between the beginning of October 1855 and the end of December 1855, but no baptism record has been found nor any more precise birth record.

  3. Where it precedes a year only, such as "ABT 1855", then it means that there is no information on the person's birth date at all and an educated guess has been made that he/she was probably born sometime around 1855.
