The four ancestral lines of this family are:
-
The
Angus Family in
Lancashire, England.
This is the family of John Angus' father, Robert Angus of Lancashire, England. The Angus
family were industrial working-class folks from
Lancashire, England where their ancestry can be traced back to the early 1700s.
Very little narrative history is known of this family. Further information on
this family can be found
below on this page.
-
The
Dobson Family in Lancashire,
England. This is the family of John Angus' mother, Judith
Dobson. The Dobson family also comes from Lancashire, England where
their ancestry can be traced back to the mid-1700s. More information on this
family can be found by clicking on the family name.
-
The
Duncan Family in
Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
This is the family of Jessie Brown Duncan's father, Robert Wilson Duncan of
Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. The Duncan family were a working class
family from Lanarkshire who were previously Ulster Scots from Northern Ireland
where their ancestry can be traced to the early 1800s. More information on this family can be found by
clicking on the family name.
-
The
Hunter Family in Lanarkshire,
Scotland.
This is the family of Jessie Brown Duncan's mother, Margaret Harten Hunter.
The Hunter maternal lineage of the Duncan family were a very poor working
class family from Lanarkshire, Scotland who were also Ulster Scots from
Northern Ireland where their ancestry can be traced back to the early 1800s. More information on this family can be
found by clicking on the family name.

The surname Angus came to England from Scotland where it is a common
name, but its earliest origins are Irish. The name Angus is the English form of
the old Gaelic name Aonghus,
which is
pronounced something like "oenish". The
name Aonghus is of very ancient origin and has its roots in early Irish
mythology as one of the most ancient names of the Celts. Aonghus possibly means "one strength"
or "strong one" and may be derived from the Irish
ķen
meaning "one" and gus meaning "force, strength, or energy".
The Irish god named Aonghus (sometimes known as Aonghus Mac Og, meaning "Angus
the young son") was the Irish god of love
and youth. The name was also borne by an 8th-century Pictish (ancient Scottish)
king and several Irish kings. In early mediaeval times a Saint Aonghus travelled
from Iona to Perthshire and is credited with bringing Celtic
(Irish) Christianity to Scotland. The surname Angus is a
patronymic surname, in other words Angus was originally a
first name long before surnames came into existence. It became a surname meaning
"son of Angus". Synonymous surnames include Mac/McAngus or Angusson.
The surnames MacNeish, MacNish and MacInnes are
variations on MacAonghus.
Many Scottish families chose to name their children after Saint Aonghus and
many of their first names would have evolved into later surnames, so the surname
Angus certainly has multiple geographic origins. Thus it would be a mistake to
say that our family is descended from any of the ancient Aonghuses named above.
Nor can we conclude that we are necessarily related to any others with the
surname Angus.
As Angus is also a place name in Scotland it is also likely that the surname
Angus has geographic roots. Thus the surname Angus could also derive from
an ancestor who came from Angus.

Our Angus ancestors came from Lancaster, Lancashire, England, before
immigrating to Canada in the early 20th century. They had lived in
Lancaster for at least 200 years prior to emigrating.
Family
tradition claims that our Angus ancestors originally came from Scotland
(and this seems quite plausible), but just when and where in Scotland is not yet
known for sure. Angus is certainly a Scottish name.
Lancaster, Lancashire
Lancaster comes from the Latin castrum ("camp") on the Lune River,
thus "Lunecastrum". Lancaster Castle was built at
the lowest crossing point of the River Lune, and was a key English
fortification against the Scots in the many wars between England and
Scotland. The county of Lancashire derives its name from "Lancaster Shire".
In the
18th and 19th centuries, coal, and the Industrial
Revolution transformed the economy of Lancashire, rising to
a golden age of industrial technology, only to crash in the Lancashire
cotton famine of the early 1860s, which left families across the county destitute and forced
into an existence of poverty. Much of the cotton for the Lancashire
cotton mills came from the southern United States. The cotton industry
in Lancashire was already in a state of over-production when the American
Civil War broke out and cotton shipments from the USA ceased. Many of
the cotton mills shut down. Widespread poverty ensued. Many people
emigrated, while others moved to Yorkshire to work in the wool industry.
Throughout the 18th century, there was a huge influx of
population as people abandoned agriculture for a new urban way of life in back-to-back terraced houses often provided for them by mill owners who wanted a
workforce close at hand. The social consequences of this change were enormous. There was a great
fear that so many people, concentrated so closely together for the first
time in history, would give rise to anarchy and mob rule. The great public
works of the day such as art galleries and parks often referred to as
Victorian philanthropy frequently hid a more practical reason to civilize
the mass of population and help maintain order.
Social conditions were deplorable. Healthcare as we understand it was non-existent. Open sewers were
commonplace and disease was widespread. These conditions gave rise to much of the legislation we have today on
public order, sanitation and building regulations.
This is Lancaster as our Angus family lived it.
Adapted from an article by the
Lancashire Family History
Society.
Little information, other than names and dates, is known about the early history of our
Angus ancestors prior to the mid-19th century. The Anguses of Lancashire were an
industrial working class family. Census records indicate employment ranged from
steel to lumber to cotton.
Sources
The information presented below on the early Lancashire Anguses is, at present,
only based on family records, IGI data, and census records from 1841 to 1901.
Further research with primary sources is presently underway to verify the
information presented below.
Our Lancashire Anguses have now been tentatively traced back to the early 18th
century family of William Angus and Mary Leah, whose children were baptized
at Over-Wyresdale, a chapel within the bounds of the parish of Lancashire.
William and Mary represent the earliest known family of Anguses in the entire
county of Lancashire. No earlier birth or marriage records for anyone of the
surname Angus have so far been located within Lancashire. Thus this could
be the earliest family of the surname Angus to have resided in Lancashire.
No birth record has been found for William in Lancashire, nor anywhere in
northern England either. As Angus is a Gaelic surname and as family tradition
claims that our Anguses were originally Scottish, it is suggested that William
may have been born in
Scotland. However there are two dozen potential matches for Scottish births for
William. Noteworthy among these are the following:
- William, born 21 MAR 1705 and bap 25 MAR 1705 in Culross, Fife, Scotland,
son of William Angus and Margaret Hunter. Siblings born/baptized all in
Culross: Robert 12/20 JAN 1703, Margaret 1 MAY/8 JUN 1707, John, 17/22 APR
1711. This is noteworthy because one of
William's descendants was baptized in Fife. It is speculated that
perhaps the later Fife birth may be an indication of where the family may have
originated.
- William, son of George Angus, born 1695 in Fyvie, Aberdeen, whose nephew,
Lewis Angus, is believed to have also moved to Lancashire.
Whether either of these is our William will have to be determined by future
research. However they do represent two of many plausible explanations for
the arrival of our Angus family into Lancashire.
William Angus married Mary Leah on 13 APR 1724 in the parish of St. Mary,
Lancaster, Lancashire, England. The following children are credited to the
parents of William and Mary Angus, believed to be this same couple. Their
children, all baptized in the Lancaster parish chapel of Over Wyresdale, are
believed to be:
-
William ANGUS b: ABT 13 AUG 1732 in Over Wyresdale, Lancaster, Lancashire.
It is suggested from the following entry that William may have married a woman
named Jane and had the following child:
-
Peter ANGUS b: ABT 28 JUL 1781 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England. Peter
is recorded in the IGI as being the son of William and Jane Angus. The
father shown here is the only known William Angus in Lancashire at the time of
Peter's birth. As
the name Peter Angus begins to appear in Liverpool after this date, it may be
that Peter Angus moved to Liverpool.
-
Margaret ANGUS b: ABT 16 MAR 1734/35 in Over Wyresdale, Lancaster, Lancashire
of whom nothing more is known.
-
Thomas ANGUS b: ABT 20 NOV 1737 in Over Wyresdale, Lancaster, Lancashire,
England, who is believed to have married Jane Bleazard. Their story
follows below.
Thomas ANGUS (believed to be the Thomas Angus above) married on 25
MAY 1765 in the parish of Saint Mary, Lancaster, Lancashire, England to Jane
BLEAZARD. They are the only family of the surname Angus to have been

are believed to have had the following children:
-
Mary ANGUS b: ABT 23 MAR 1766 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England is believed to

England. It is not yet known if they had any children.

Sarah was born ABT

similar fields of industrial employment, either in the lumber, steel, or cotton
industries.
Sarah Roberts had the following son from a previous relationship:
- Robert C. (or E.) ROBERTS b: 1853 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England.
Census records disagree over his middle initial. The 1901 census
confirms him as a "step son" of John Angus. As of 1901 he is living with
his parents, unmarried, and working as a general labourer.
The children of John Angus and Sarah Roberts were:
-
Mary Magdalen ANGUS b: ABT 16 MAY 1856 in Castle, Lancaster, Lancashire, England.
She worked as a cotton weaver. She is believed to have married ABT JUN 1882 in
Preston, Lancashire, England to John Bateman, however this marriage is
unverified. Mary is not found in the 1891/1901 census for England so it
is assumed that she either died or emigrated.
-
Jane Ann ANGUS b: 1859 in Castle, Lancaster, Lancashire, England.
Prior to her marriage she worked as a silk spinner. She married ABT MAR
1878 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England to Frederick LAMB b: 1858 in Lancaster,

Thomas Robert ANGUS was born 11 NOV 1875 in Castle, Lancaster, Lancashire,
England as a son of John Angus and Sarah
Roberts (shown above). He went by "Robert". He married ABT JUN 1895 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England
to Judith DOBSON. She was born ABT 22 OCT 1876 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England.
Robert immigrated about 1919 to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada with his wife and
adult children. It is not known why the family moved from Lancaster to Hamilton, but it
is likely that it was with hopes of better prospects for industrial employment. All three of the Angus children married and settled in the Hamilton area
however their descendants have since lost contact with each other. Judith
died young, so her living grandchildren have very little memory of her.
Thomas was the fourth consecutive generation of his family to work as a sawyer. What is known of her ancestry can be
found on the Dobson Family Page. "Robert" Angus and Judith Dobson had three children:
-
Thomas ANGUS b: 15 NOV 1895 in Lancashire, England who immigrated to
Canada with his birth family where he married Rose ALLAN. Thomas
served as a Corporal in the 120th Battalion for the Canadian Forces in WWI.
He died at age 33 from pneumonia. Thomas and Rose had no children.
-
John "Jack" ANGUS b: 19 MAY 1898 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England whose story
continues below. Jack immigrated with his birth family to Hamilton,
Ontario, Canada. He married on 18 MAR 1921 in Hamilton, Wentworth,
Ontario to Jessie Brown DUNCAN. Their descendants are presented
below.
-
Ethel ANGUS b: MAY 1900 in Lancashire, England who immigrated to
Canada with her birth family (see below) where she married Sydney PAPPIN, Sr.
and had children.
