Thomas Newport the Immigrant

This page contains information researched and assembled by Richard W. Baker, Jim Steers, Doug Griffith and others.

Much of this information will be new to the descendants of Thomas Newport who have already submitted their records and family genealogies to the Newport Website. I encourage comments, additions and corrections.

Text Box: Evidence for the Identification of Our Immigrant Ancestor – Thomas Newport

Thomas Newport is found in various records in New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Delaware in the early and mid 1700s. There is no official record that I know of telling of his date of arrival in the American Colonies or of his occupation. There are no land records that I know of identifying him as a planter/farmer. He considered himself a Quaker although the only Society of Friends record that I have seen naming him is a denial of membership in the Cape May/Egg Harbor, NJ Monthly Meeting. His son Jesse and daughter Mary became Quakers. There is no indication that he was a Quaker prior to living in the Colonies and it is stated in one family biography that he was an Episcopalian prior to his marriage. It does not state which marriage.

Thomas helped his daughter Mary begin what became successful bakery business in Philadelphia, PA. It is from Mary Newport’s last will and testament that we learn that Thomas was married twice and that Jesse, who was younger than Mary, was her half sibling. Thomas married his second wife, Anne Barker, in the First Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia which was not a church for either family.

Thomas Newport was said to have arrived in America in 1698 from London. From a bio of David Newport, born December 18, 1822:
“David Newport is a descendant of Thomas Newport, who settled in New Jersey about 1698, coming from London, England.”
This family story from a descendant four generations down from the immigrant Thomas is presented as fact, but it is safe to assume that the immigration date as well as other information could be in error but probably has that kernel of truth often found in oral and written family histories.
David Newport Biographical Information

Thomas Newport is named in a 1757 Proceedings of the Orphan’s Court of Sussex Co., Delaware in a Barker family (his wife’s family) issue. His son Jesse and his family are recorded in Quaker Monthly Meeting in Sussex Co., Delaware.
I know of no other Thomas Newport in the Colonies up to that time.

Elizabeth Lockwood, daughter of Richard Lockwood and Anne, was christened 7 Nov 1692 in Saint Dunstan, Stepney, London, England. This places Thomas’ first wife Elizabeth Lockwood at Saint Dunstan Parish, Stepney, the parish church of mariners. I have not been able to identify any other Thomas Newport who fits the information available including the family story ( The Christopher Newport Legend ) that has been past on to many generations of Newport families. It is the story that states that our Thomas Newport was a descendant of Capt. Christopher Newport who lived and sailed from the port in Stepney Parish. The connection to Capt. Christopher Newport has not been proven but it does indicate that the early descendants of Thomas, even in Jesse’s family, connect Thomas to a mariner’s family. Capt. Christopher’s father was also named Christopher and could be the Christopher from whom Thomas descends through the Thomas Newport, a mariner, and whose family is recorded in the Stepney Parish records.
