Jesse Newport died August 18, 1871 in 66 yr. of his age.

Around the bottom of the stone are the names Geo. W. Newport,

Wm. Newport, and Mary Mills - probably Jesse's sons and daughter.

Reed Cemetery is one the most interesting cemeteries that I have come
across. While visiting Iowa this August, my 84 yr. old father and I
spent an afternoon driving over the back roads north of Richland, Iowa.
We were searching for places where he had lived as a child, and looking
for a couple of cemeteries. Reed Cemetery was very challenging. We could
see it at a distance with a white fence sitting atop a hill in the
middle of the fields 1/4 mile away from the road. We wondered how to get
back there and stopped at 3 houses where no one was home. Finally, at
the 4th house a friendly man told us about a path that went through the
fields to the cemetery. After a stop at one more house to ask for
permission to go on the land and we were finally on our way. My father
drove his pickup truck down and up a path through soybean fields with
grasshoppers hopping on the hood. Reed Cemetery sits serenely on top of
a hill overlooking fields and the Skunk River basin. My understanding is that
the Harkert family, who owns the surrounding land, maintains the cemetery
themselves. Many thanks to them.
