!Homestead records show that Jesse filed on a homestead about 2 miles away.

!According to daughter, Alice Eldora "Dora" Williams, they were the only settlers in the area, but there were hundreds of indians. They had to go to Susanville, over 100 miles away, for supplies and to file land claims. They had a small dairy herd, made and packed butter and took it to Susanville to trade for groceries. They also had a few head of sheep and the women and girls washed, carded and spun the wool into yarn, which they used to knit garments for the families. They also made candles from tallow. The children attended school in a little cabin about 6 miles from home, with no floor and 1 large table with benches.

Notes for CHARLES ALVIN PAULK:

!Obituary notice from Klamath Falls newspaper, 2 Jan 1950: Charlie Paulk, 71, known for years around here as "Hardrock" was found dead in his cabin on Broad street yesterday afternoon. The old-timer who in past years had made his living collecting and selling beer bottles, pushing his little green cart along the streets, apparently died of old age. He was heard by neighbors around 8 a.m. and his body was discovered by Pete Savoy at 2 p.m. Paulk was born, according to available records, in Beaver, Calif., July 12, 1878, and spent a good deal of his early life in the Alturas and Lakeview area as a freighter and lumberjack. He came to Klamath Falls from Lakeview in 1927. A picture of Paulk and his freight team used to hang in the Lakeview hotel in Lakeview.  In recent years Paulk had become something of a town character in Klamath Falls and had become argumentive and critical of the government. He is believed to have given himself the nicknames of "Hardroch" and Mahogany".  Several years ago Paulk operated a "bottle exchange" in a cabin on S. 6th, until it was destroyed by fire. More recently, he had roomed at the Hot Springs hotel before moving into the Broad street cabin.  According to records, he was married twice, in 1909 and 1910, one marriage ending in death of the wife and the second in divorce. He has a sister, Mrs. Nettie Garrison at Susanville and another, Mrs. A.C. Pratt, at Alturas.  The body was taken to Ward's.

Notes for WILLIAM HENRY BURKHART:

Divorced 1 Nov 1926, Marion Co., Oregon, on grounds of desertion. Henry left the area to avoid child support payments and the family never heard from him again.  May have gone to  Canada.
