OBITUARY:

     NEWPORT -  Elizabeth McCormick, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McCormick, was born in Nicholas county, Kentucky, September 9, 1831, aged seventy-eight years, six months and eight days.  The family consisting of her parents, two brothers and three sisters moved to Morgan county, Illinois in 1834.  When Elizabeth has completed her education in the Presbyterian college at Jacksonville she taught school for a time, after which she was united in marriage to John Newport.

     To this union three children were born, viz:  Mary J., Chalmers L., and Emma V.

     The two former have preceded "mother" to the spirit world.  Mrs. Newport lived a humble and devoted Christian life, first in the Presbyterian church and later in the Methodist Episcopal church, of which she was an exemplary member at the time of her death.  She was widely known as a true sympathizing and highly refined woman, always loving and upholding the grand and noble things of life.

     With her family she moved from Morgan county, Illinois, to Bois D'Arc township, Montgomery county, Illinois, in 1818[Note: this date must be incorrect!], where she helped reduce the wild prairie neighborhood to an ideal country home,  In the declining years of her life, together with her husband and granddaughter, Miss Edna Greene, she resided in Farmersville, where she gained a wide circle of sympathizing friends, who will ever remember her exceeding devotion to her afflicted  companion of the last years of her life.  Grandma's was a life of self sacrifice to her children and husband.

     She leaves her feeble companion, one daughter, eight grandsons, eight granddaughters, two great grandsons and a host of friends to mourn her loss.

     The funeral services were held from the M. e. church in Farmersville on Sunday, March 20.  An audience much larger that could be accommodated in the church, gathered to pay their tribute of loving respect to the memory of this truly good woman.  Music was furnished by a mixed choir with Miss Blanche White presiding at the organ.  A beautiful solo, "Jesus Lover of My soul," was rendered by Mrs. Charles L. Flowers of Litchfield, Wife of a former pastor of this church.

     The funeral sermon was ably delivered by the Rev. C. X. Boyd of Downs, Ill., also a former pastor.  The Burial took place in the Rovey cemetery, the pall bearers being the grandsons of the deceased.  The memory of Mrs. Newport like a sweet fragrance will linger long among us.

     "you may break, you may shatter the vase if you will but the scent of the roses will cling round it still."

               OUR HOME-MAKER.

      When the mountains slope to the westward,

      And their purple chalices hold,

     The new made wine of the sunset-- Crimson and amber and gold.

     In this old wide-opened doorway,

     With the elm boughs over-head,

     The house all garnished behind her,

     And the plentiful table spread.

     She has stood to welcome our coming

     Watching our upward climb,

     In the sweet June weather that brought us,

     Oh, many and many a time.

     Again the doorway opened

     And the house is garnished and sweet,

     But she silently waits for our coming,

     And we enter with silent feet.

     A little within she is waiting,

     Not where she has net us before,

     For over the pleasant threshold

     She is only to cross once more.

     The smile on her face is quiet,

     And a lily is on her breast;

     Her hands are folded together,

     And the word on her lips is "rest."

     And yet it looks like a welcome,

     For her work is ompassed and one,

     All things are seemly and ready,

     And her summer is just begun.

     It is we who may not cross over;

     Only with song and prayer;

     A little way into the glory,

     We may each, as we leave her there,

     But we cannot think of her idle;

     She must be a homemaker still;

     God giveth that work to the angels

     Who fitted the task fulfill.

     And somewhere yet in the hill tops

     Of the country that hath no pain,

     She will watch in her beautiful doorway.

     To Bid us a welcome again.
