Ancestors of Virgie R., Nellie M., & Lloyd K. Rea

First Generation

Virgie Rosalind REA, born on 9 Aug 1905, Alturas, Modoc Co., California.

Nellie Mildred REA, born on 19 Mar 1907, Alturas, Modoc Co., California; married Cloyd Lewis HANEY.

Lloyd Kirk REA, born on 22 Sep 1910, Alturas, Modoc Co., California; married Maxine Lois DOOLEY; died on 13 Aug 1968, Mt. Shasta, California.

Second Generation

  1. William Lloyd REA was born on 28 May 1868 in Portland, Dorset, England.2

(Registration district is Weymouth, sub district of Portland, county of Dorset; Twenty Eighth May 1868; William Lloyd; male; Father William Rea; Mother Matilda Rea, formerly Bearman; occupation of father Clerk; Signature, description and residence of informant: William Rea, father, Portland; registered First, June 1868.)

He died on 26 May 1950 in Alturas, Modoc Co., California.2,3  He was buried in Alturas Cemetery, Alturas, Modoc Co., California.3

As researched by Peter Saunders (a William Rea descendant in England), William was employed as a chemist by a large company, possibly Boots or Timothy Whites (not confirmed) and moved by the company to Cardiff and Bristol soon after marriage where two of his children were born. The family story is that he was caught stealing from a shop and to avoid a court case his father paid for him to emigrate to America or Canada. He had certainly left before Leslie was born (Leslie was born in Wakefield in 1897). William Rea arrived in Canada on March 27th 1895, aged 30 (he would actually have turned 30 at the end of May 1898), aboard the ship 'State of California'. The ship had traveled from Glasgow or Liverpool. A list of ships arrivals indicates that the 'State of California' did not go to Canada until 1897. In 1898 she was renamed 'Californian' and started her first Liverpool - Portland sailing to Montreal on 10th Mar.1898. A part of William Rea's California family story that might actually be true places him in Winnipeg, Canada sometime before coming to California. [I am inclined to think that he went to Canada in 1898 after his son Leslie was born. RWB]

Newspaper obituary found in possessions of Nellie Mildred Rea:  WILLIAM L. REA FUNERAL: Funeral services where held here Tuesday for William Lloyd Rea, long-time Modoc resident, who died here last Friday.  The Rev. Don Jessup of Dunsmuir officiated.   Born in Winnipeg, Canada May 28, 1875, Rea was taken by his father to England at the age of six after his mother died.  There he received his schooling and started serving an apprenticeship as a pharmacist.  He came to the United States in 1901 and became a citizen in 1908.   Mr. Rea and Florence Williams were married Oct. 2, 1904 and had two daughters, Mrs. Virgie Meyer of Alturas and Mrs. Nellie Haney of Dunsmuir, and a son, Lloyd Rea, also of Dunsmuir.  After operating a ranch at Davis Creek, in 1929 he entered the employment of the NCO and Southern Pacific railroads. In 1941 he retired.   In addition to his widow and children, Rea is survived by six grandchildren, Betty Partin, Lakeview, Ore.; Claudia Tooker, Chowchilla; Phyllis Hill, Alturas, and Billie Lee White, Klamath and Irene Rea of Dunsmuir.  Three great grandchildren, Richard and Gary Partin of Lakeview, and Becky Hill of Alturas also survive. [William Lloyd Rea was actually born 28 May 1868, Portland, Dorset, England]

Certificate of Naturalization, #24181, Petition vol. 1, page1, Stub, Vol. 2419, page 1, dated 26 February, 1908, for William Lloyd Rea, gives a description of him as aged 34 years, height 5 ft, 5 in., white, complexion dark, eyes hazel, hair dark brown, with no visible distinguishing marks.  It lists his wife as Florence Ethel Rea, 20 yrs, Alturas, Modoc Co., children Virgie Rea, age 2 years, Nellie Rea, age 11 mos., both of Alturas, Modoc Co., Cal.  It says he was previously a subject of England.

["Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive." Although there are parts of this story that are true, most of the story about William prior to coming to America was fabricated.] Article written by Nellie Mildred Rea Haney, titled "My Father" - My grandfather William Lloyd Rea and his wife Matilda Bearman left England and settled in Winnipeg, Canada.  He was a cabinet maker, as were several of his ancestors. One of our ancestors built a casket for a king. Their son William Lloyd was born May 28, 1874.  He was baptized in the Anglican Church in Winnipeg which the parents attended. When my father was five years old, his mother fell down the cellar steps and died from a broken neck.  She was buried in Winnipeg. Virgie and I could not find her grave when we went to Winnipeg.  The Anglican Church had burned and all of the records had been destroyed. After grandmother Matilda died my grandfather and his five year old son Billie returned to England. Billie's maternal grandmother, Mary Ball Lloyd, and his Aunt Grimsby Wakefield took care of him.  This aunt had one son, Hampton. He lived in Wales. Dad's mother had one sister and six brothers.  Five of the brothers were not married.  They were royal engineers and lived in barracks.  Harry, the sixth brother, was a military man.  He married and settled in Bermuda. Grandfather Rea had four aunts, Laura Skelton, an Aunt Rose, who married a Lord Fairfax.  I do not know the names of the other two aunts. At sixteen years of age, he was apprenticed to a pharmacist but he found life too tame in London and decided to return to Canada.  His father paid for his passage to Canada. He spent most of his early years in Alberta, working on railroads. He often mentioned the Peace River. He went to the U.S. several times before he came down to Callahan and did a little gold mining in that area. He traveled in a horse and buggy with a friend by the last name of Smith.  The buggy broke down a few miles south of Davis Creek.  He and Smith went on to Alturas and left the buggy by the roadside.  When he returned for the buggy, he was told Lewis Henderson had taken it home to Davis Creek.  That was the end of that buggy. He returned to Alturas and met my Grandpa Williams in a saloon and hit him up for a job.  Grandpa liked him and gave him a job herding sheep. He did not hire Smith, so Smith left town looking for work elsewhere.  He and my father corresponded for some time but finally lost touch with each other. My Mother was fifteen at that time. She was taking a post-graduate course at the local one room and teacher school.  Dad helped her with her lessons, especially Algebra lessons.  I always wondered why she was such a whiz at Algebra.  Now I know.  Aunt Blanche gave Virgie this information recently.  She also told her my cousin Lulu, who was quite small at the time, had a severe case of measles.  My father knew quite a bit about medicines.  He doctored her and she recovered. He courted my mother and they were married Oct. 2, 1904.   She was seventeen and a half and he was thirty. He had applied for his citizenship papers before they were married so my mother did not lose her American citizenship. At that time, if a lady married a non-citizen, she lost her U.S. citizenship. He built both the cabins on our two homesteads.  When he proved up on the first homestead on Parker Creek, he took up a second homestead near Surprise Station, twelve miles from Alturas.  The first home he sold to Cahn Fogarty for $500. The little cabin on the second homestead had two rooms, a kitchen and a bedroom.  The rest room facilities were quite a distance from the cabin. It is was necessary to make a trip out there after dark the cry of the coyotes raised the hair on the back of your neck. Dad worked for Leland and Meyer on the Devil's Garden while we were proving up on the second homestead.  Sometimes the family went with him and Mother cooked for the cowboys at Antelope and Bowles Meadows Ranches. When the homestead was his, he sold it and we moved to Davis Creek.  We lived near Davis Creek until Virgie and I had graduated from grammar school and Virgie had taken two post graduate courses and I had one. Mother, Virgie and I moved to Alturas so we could go to High School. The following year, Dad sold the cattle and moved to Alturas with us. He went to work for the N.C.O. Railroad as a Bridge and Building Foreman.  Most of that work was out of town and he had to stay in an outfit car and batch.  He did not like that, so when a Section Foreman's job came open in town, he took it and stayed with us until he retired at 65. For the last fifteen years of his life, he was badly crippled with arthritis and could only get around on crutches. He died of a heart attack at age 76.  He is buried in the Alturas Cemetery.

He died on 26 May 1950 in Alturas, Modoc Co., California.5,15  He was buried in Alturas Cemetery, Alturas, Modoc Co., California.15

The ship had travelled from Glasgow or Liverpool.

REA FUNERAL RITES ARE HELD HERE  Funeral services where held here Tuesday for William Lloyd Rea, long-time Modoc resident, who died here last Friday.  The Rev. Don Jessup of Dunsmuir officiated.   Born in Winnepeg, Canada May 28, 1875, Rea was taken by his father to England at the age of six after his mother died.

After grandmother Matilda died, my grandfather and his five year old son Billie returned to England.
