Fire Claims Toddler's Life. Child with lighter blamed for blaze.

MAQUOKETA, Authorities have determined that a child playing with a lighter caused a house fire that resulted in the death of a 2-year-old boy here Monday.

Justin Clark, 115 S. Mattteson St., the son of Jason & Kelli Manning Clark, died from smoke inhalation as a result of a fire at his home. His mother & 2 siblings--Kali, 16 months & Jordan, 4, --were injured in the fire. Kelli & the 2 children were taken to Jackson County Hospital for treatment. They were transferred to the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City & released Tuesday.

In a report issued by the Iowa State Fire Marshall Tuesday, the cause of the fire was accidental as a result of a child playing with a lighter. A spokesman for the Maquoketa Police Department said another child was playing with the lighter that started the fire.

Justin was found in his bedroom by firefighters after they had extinguished the fire. Though his mother had advised firefighters that he was still inside the house, no one could enter the house because of the dense smoke. Maquoketa firefighters were called to the home at 9:50 am Monday, after a report of smoke pouring from an upstairs window. Firefighters extinguished the fire, confined to the home's second floor, in a matter of minutes. Maquoketa firefighters & police officers found no smoke detectors in the house. The Jackson County Medical Examiner later determined that Justin died from smoke inhalation.

Blanche Marie Manning Massey

Maquoketa Newspaper - Maquoketa, C, Iowa - provided by Bev Skoff

Blanche Marie Manning Massey has gone from her earthly home & loved ones. So recently had she made friends, calls & been seen among us, that we could not at once comprehend the truth. When it did impress itself upon us, a cloud of gloom settled down upon our hearts. Shall we never more see her beaming eyes, her cheerful face, her sweet smile? Has the grim reaper claimed her for all time? 'Tis too true & we must pray for grace to submissively bow before this omnipotent degree. But we thank GOD that death cannot claim her eternally. A stronger than he has come & gotten the victory over death & the grave. They give up the dead.... In that Saviour, she did put her trust while yet a girl & with him she has walked down through the years. We must believe that our LOSS is her GAIN.

Blanche Marie Manning, the 6th child of 11 children was born 7-22-1919, to Harvy Lee & Cora Belle Arterberry Manning, in Jackson Co., Iowa. She made her home with her daughter BEVERLY (MRS DONALD) SKOFF, in Camanche, Iowa for the last 28 years, since the death of her husband, Clifford Massey. Saturday January 24, 1998, she got up to walk out of her bedroom & fell, breaking her left wrist. After returning from the doctor where she got her arm set & casted, she had a massive stroke & massive heart attack. She was taken to the Samaritan Hospital. Those 15 days were extremely rough on her. On Sunday, 2-8-1998, she went to join her heavenly family. She won the love & respect of all. Her presence was always an inspiration. Many there are who will shed tears of sorrow because of her taking away.

She was united in holy matrimony with Clifford LeRoy Massey on 11-5-1955 in Maquoketa, Iowa. He died 7-22-1969. Left to mourn her death are her children, Mrs Donald (Beverly) Skoff & Mrs Allen (Cindy) Perry, grandchildren, Mrs Scott (Diane) Rink, Mrs John (LuAnne) Kuhl, Michael Skoff, Tracy, Joseph & Christopher Perry..
