Alexander L Arterberry, son of Bennett & Caroline Hudson Arterberry, was born10 May 1858, in Jackson Co., Tennessee, & died 2 February 1934, Maquoketa, Jackson Co., Iowa, at age 75. He had been in failing health for 5 years & in serious condition for almost a year. At the time of his death he was living at 702 South Second Streeet, Maquoketa, Iowa.
(He was probably born in 1859, not 1858, for his sister Catherine was born in1858.)
Caroline was born to Oliver P & Eliza Plumlee Hudson. Eliza was said to be full blood Chickasaw Indian.
Alexander married Josephine Walker in 1880. Josephine was born 5 December 1861, in Elmira, Chemung Co., New York, the daughter of Thomas & Phoebe L Manning Walker. She died 6 November 1946, at the home of her son, Levi Arterberry at 702 South Second Street, at age 84, after an extended illness. She came to Iowa as a child with her parents & spent most of her life in the Maquoketa Community.
Alexander worked as a coal miner in Perry Co., Illinois, with his father and brother Frank. He later became a farmer when they moved to Texas, in 1881, where his first two children, Thomas William & Bennett N, were born. They then moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where a daughter Cora Belle was born in1885. Later they moved to Tiskilwa, Illinois, where the remaining children, Minnie L. and twins, Phoebe Jane & Levi Alex were born. Around 1919, he came to Maquoketa, Jackson Co., Iowa, where he died 25 years later.
Both Alexander & Josephine were buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Maquoketa.
This photo was given by Martha Arterberry. From what I have found, the home was built by Moses Arterberry, father of Bennett Arterberry and then passed down to his son, Thompson Arterberry. If anyone has any history on this farm, please let me know. Our cousin, Ralph Wesley is currently in contact with the people who own the farm now and plans a trip to see it out and will report back to in the near future.
Thank you Martha for this photo!
